“That isn’t always a good thing.”

“No.”

Thomas looked toward Ward, standing outside the ambulance.

“Maybe you’ll be smarter.”

“I wouldn’t count on it.”

He laughed, then winced.

“Take care of that young man.”

“I think he believes he’s taking care of me.”

“Men need their illusions.”

Nathan appeared beside the doors.

“The hospital is waiting.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You coming?”

“Someone has to make sure you don’t escape.”

Thomas glanced toward Mom.

“No. I think you have another reason.”

Nathan looked at her.

Mom’s hand found his.

For once, he didn’t deny it.

Before the ambulance left, Thomas caught Nathan’s wrist.

“I helped James hide Elias because he was my best friend.”

“I know.”

“I would do it again.”

“I know that too.”

Thomas looked at Mom.

“James wanted Nathan to stay near you.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“He never blamed you for William. He knew you loved Ellie.”

Mom’s eyes filled.
