He laughed about something before ending the call and shoving the phone into his pocket.
“There he go,” I said.
Zeek followed my line of sight.
“That's him?”
“Yeah.”
“You ready?”
I cracked my neck.
“I been ready.”
Jamal started walking across the parking lot toward an older Charger parked a few spaces away. He never looked our way. Never noticed the two strangers watching his every move.
“Let's go.”
Zeek fell in step beside me as we made our way across the lot.
We hadn't even made it halfway before I called out to him.
“Jamal.”
He stopped walking, and slowly, he turned around, his eyes bouncing between Zeek and me.
“Yeah?”
I shoved my hands into the pockets of my jeans.
“Need to holler at you for a minute.”
His brows knitted together.
“Do I know y'all?”
“Nawl.”
His face twisted with confusion.
“Then what the fuck y'all wanna talk to me about?”
“I wasn't asking.”
My voice stopped him cold. For a moment, he didn't move. Then, he slowly looked over his shoulder.
“Excuse me?”
I took my time closing the distance between us.
“I said… I wasn't asking.”
His eyes bounced between Zeek and me.
“I don't know y'all.”
“I know.”
