“I’m sorry. Mama would not let me go; I suspect because she didn’t want me to run into you.”
“In keeping you at home, she drove you straight into my arms,” he said with a wink.
“Amusing how that works.”
It only took one look at his lips, then back up at his eyes, to rekindle even more romance between them.
Caught up in the intoxicating moment, Lionel and Jemima's lips melded together with a hunger and urgency that defied restraint. Their mouths moved in a sensual rhythm, exploring each other with a fervor that left them breathless. Lionel's kiss was tender and possessive, his lips coaxing forth a symphony of sensations from Jemima's very core.
Jemima's fingers entangled themselves in Lionel's hair, tugging at the strands as if trying to anchor herself to him, unwilling to let go. Her body pressed against his, aching to merge with his warmth and strength. A surge of desire surged through her veins, igniting a fire that burned hotter with each passing second. Lionel's hands, firm yet gentle, roamed over Jemima's body, caressing her with a reverence that stirred a deep yearning within her. They trailed along her back, leaving a trail of electric tingles in their wake. A shiver coursed through Jemima's spine as Lionel's fingers traced the delicate curve of her waist before tangling with the fabric of her gown, pulling her closer still.
Their mouths continued their dance, tongues intertwining in a passionate tango, their taste mingling in a heady elixir of desire. Jemima whimpered softly against Lionel's lips, the sound vibrating through their kiss, a confession of the intensity of her longing.
Lost in their own world, the rest of the ship and its inhabitants faded away. All that mattered was the connection they shared, the unspoken language of touch and sensation. The night sky above bore witness to their forbidden dance as if applauding their audacity, bestowing its cosmic blessing upon their stolen moment of passion.
But alas, the intrusion of the chatty crew members shattered their intimate sanctuary. The distant voices pierced through the haze of desire, serving as a harsh reminder of the world outside their bubble of passion. Reluctantly, Lionel broke the kiss, his lips lingering against Jemima's as if savoring the taste of their forbidden union for a moment longer.
Breathless and flushed, Jemima leaned her forehead against Lionel's, their labored breaths mingling in the cool night air. Disappointment combined with desire in her eyes, mirroring the conflict within her heart. The hunger that had been awakened burned brighter, urging her to seek more, to defy the constraints of their surroundings.
With a tender touch, Lionel brushed his thumb against Jemima's swollen lips, his gaze filled with longing and determination. "Patience, my love," he murmured, his voice a husky whisper against her skin. "Our time will come."
Jemima nodded, her breath still unsteady as she tried to regain her composure. The taste of their stolen kiss lingered on her lips, a delicious ache that tormented and delighted her. The interruption had only intensified her craving, heightening her resolve to savor every stolen moment they could away from prying eyes.
“Maybe... in Jamaica,” she said breathlessly.
“I hope so,” he said, and she believed him, for the look in his eyes was so sincere and full of longing. “But right now, you ought to get back to your cabin. I should hate for anyone to discover us like this.”
“Still a secret after all these years,” she teased.
Goodnight, Jemima. I…” the words hung in the air between them like laundry drying on a line. Her heart thumped as she waited for the anticipated words. “I’ve missed you,” he finally said.
It wasn’t the answer she was expecting, but she accepted it, kissing him on the cheek.
“Goodnight, Captain. I’ll see you in the morning.”
As she settled into her bed back in the cabin, Jemima whispered a silent prayer to the stars above, seeking their guidance and blessing for the second time today. She longed for the strength and courage to pursue the path her heart desired. Wrapped in the cocoon of her blankets, Jemima allowed her mind to wander, envisioning a future where Lionel stood by her side, where the island town embraced them with open arms. She pictured their laughter mingling with the sound of crashing waves, their love blossoming amidst the quaint streets and bustling markets.
The possibilities stretched before her, shimmering like the distant stars that had witnessed their stolen kiss. And as Jemima drifted into the realm of dreams, she clung to the hope that their love could defy the odds, that together, they could navigate the uncharted waters and find their own island of bliss.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Jemima stirred in her sleep, her eyes fluttering open as the early morning light filtered through the small porthole in her cabin. The gentle rocking motion of the vessel had become a comforting lullaby during the long voyage, but it seemed that tranquility was about to be disrupted.
Before she could fully rouse herself to prepare for the day, the door to her cabin swung open with a resounding crash. Startled, Jemima sat up, her eyes widening at the sight of a disheveled Lionel standing in the doorway.
“It is customary to knock, you know!” she shouted, pulling the quilt over her body.
“No time. This cannot wait,” Lionel urged.
"What in the name of Neptune's beard is your purpose, Captain?”
“Look at you, using seafaring language! Mr. Coade must have taught you that one,” he said, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“I thought you said this was urgent.”
“Yes, there is. Come to the upper deck. There is something you absolutely must see," he declared.
She let out an exasperated sigh, rubbing her temples to shake off the remnants of sleep.
