Agony tore through Lionel's shoulder like a searing hot blade, a shockwave of pain threatened to consume him. The impact sent him reeling backward, blood staining his coat as he fought to remain upright. The edges of his vision blurred, darkness encroaching from the periphery. Through the haze of pain, Lionel heard Jemima's voice, her cries of fear and anguish mingling with the chaos around them. But her words were muffled, distant as if coming from another realm. The world seemed to spin, voices blending into a dissonant symphony of confusion.
Lionel's body felt heavy, his limbs growing weaker with each passing second. But even in the face of his own mortality, his determination remained unyielding. He mustered every ounce of strength left within him, his gaze fixated on Jemima's tear-streaked face. As his legs threatened to give way beneath him, Lionel summoned the last vestiges of his willpower, keeping himself upright, refusing to let his love be taken from him. His breath came in ragged gasps, his hand trembling, but he stood as a barrier between Jemima and the darkness that loomed over them both.
Jemima knelt beside him and cradled him in her arms as the chaos unfolded around them. Others were fighting, but Lionel simply couldn’t.
“Jemima,” he gasped.
“Ssh, don’t speak! Save your breath. You’ll be alright!”
“In the case that I am not... please. I’m sorry. For everything.”
“I forgive you,” she said almost immediately. Tears streaked down her beautiful face as his vision went double. “Just live. Please, that is all I ask. Live!” And she kissed him passionately as if her life force might pass to him through her lips.
Just then, Ellis appeared at Jemima’s side, also sort of blurry in Lionel’s eyes.
“He needs the surgeon. That horrible man shot him in the shoulder,” he heard Jemima explain.
Ellis nodded. “I’ll take him. He’ll be fine, I promise.”
“Ellis, please don’t let him die. I love him!”
Lionel was too weak to say anything snarky, much less sincere, so he smiled lazily instead.
She loved him. After all this time, she loved him. And then his world faded to black, his last sight being Jemima’s concerned face above his.

Jemima's heart raced as she watched Lionel sleep, his handsome features softened by the flickering candlelight. The room was hushed, save for the crackling fire in the hearth, which cast dancing shadows upon the walls. It was too hot in this Jamaican summer for a fire, but Dr. Warren insisted on keeping Lionel warm. Her delicate fingers trembled as they brushed against the cool sheets that covered his wounded shoulder, the fabric stained with blood. Now, as she sat by his side, the weight of her worry was almost suffocating. Her eyes scanned his face, searching for any signs of discomfort or distress. The lines of pain etched upon his forehead worried her, and she wished she could bear his pain for him.
Her mind wandered to the thought that had haunted her since the moment he had fallen. What if he had not been fortunate enough to return to her side? What would she do if he were taken from her? The mere thought sent a shiver down her spine, a wave of icy dread coursing through her veins. Lost in her thoughts, Jemima startled as Lionel stirred beneath her touch. His eyes fluttered open, revealing the depth of his sea-blue gaze, now clouded with fatigue. A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips, mischief dancing in his eyes.
"Ah, my dearest Jemima," Lionel's voice broke the silence, laced with teasing affection. "Are you trying to charm me with your ardent devotion?"
Jemima's heart soared at the sound of his voice, relief flooding her.
"Lionel," she whispered, her voice filled with a blend of joy and worry. "I feared the worst. I thought I had lost you."
He reached out his uninjured hand to gently caress her cheek, his touch warm and comforting. "Fear not, my love," he reassured her, his voice tender. "I am made of sterner stuff than to be defeated by a mere bullet. Besides, I couldn't bear the thought of leaving you behind."
A soft sob escaped Jemima's lips, a mixture of relief and unshed tears. She leaned into his touch, her eyes shimmering with unspoken emotions.
"Oh, Lionel," she murmured, her voice filled with gratitude and love. "I cannot bear the thought of a world without you. I’m sorry about earlier."
Lionel's lips curved into a gentle smile, his eyes never leaving hers. "And I, my dear, cannot fathom a world without your radiant presence. You are my guiding North Star. I am sorry I did not tell you of my original plans earlier. I was angry when I penned that letter to your brother, but after we spent more time together, I realized it was the wrong choice.”
They remained locked in each other's gaze, their unspoken words weaving an invisible tapestry of love and devotion. The room seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in their cocoon of affection.
A soft chuckle escaped Lionel's lips, breaking the reverie that had enveloped them. "Come now, Jemima," he teased, his voice lighthearted. "Must you always fret over me?"
Jemima's eyes sparkled with a mix of mirth and exasperation. There was a playful glint in her gaze as she spoke. "You have a knack for underestimating the depth of my devotion. I shall forever fret over you, whether you like it or not."
Lionel laughed a deep and infectious sound that filled the room with warmth. "
“Very well, my dear. Fret away, but know that I shall always be there to tease you for it."
In a moment of shared laughter, their mirth merged with the crackling fire and the rhythmic thumping of their hearts. Jemima realized, in that very instant, that regardless of the challenges ahead, their love would be their safe haven, their steadfast support amidst the tempest.
