“Night, ma.”
I stood there watching her pull off while rain soaked through my hoodie.
Marcus’s name kept sitting in my head, though.
$$$$$
I woke up the next morning, still thinking about Sade asleep on the couch.
I should’ve been thinking about work.
Instead, I kept hearing her sleepy ass voice saying goodnight to me.
I got to my office early with coffee and my laptop, trying to focus on numbers, but my mind kept circling back to her.
So, I typed Marcus Hale into my system instead.
Basic search first.
Real estate. Finance. High ass credit score. Business articles.
Regular nigga shit.
Then I saw the last name tied somewhere else.
Marcus Jewel-Hale.
I frowned.
“Jewel?”
I opened another tab.
Randy Jewel.
Same father. Different mothers. Mother gave him her last name.
I leaned back in my chair and laughed once under my breath.
“Of course.”
Out of every nigga in L.A., Sade ended up with that nigga’s brother. Randy worked for Sade’s mother’s ex-husband, which was the real reason I ain’t fuck with him. Now I really had to keep my eyes open. It didn’t say Marcus was linked to that, so I kept looking. It looked like they were in different lanes and worked for completely different companies.
I kept scrolling.
Then I found a police report.
Domestic violence.
Four years ago.
Charges dropped because the girlfriend refused to testify.
I read the report twice anyway.
No jail time. No conviction.
Still sat wrong with me.
