She held his gaze. Not assessing—deciding. The same look she brought to a material choice when she was certain it was right but wanted to say it aloud, to make it real. “The mark,” she said. “If the bond completes—if that happens—I want it to happen. Not because it’s biology. Because it’s mine and I’m choosing it.” She pressed her palm to his chest. Over the double beat. “I wanted you to know that. Before it becomes a fact rather than a choice.”

He was very still. The kind of stillness that meant the words had landed somewhere the archive could not reach.

“It is already both,” he said. “The choice and the fact. They have been the same thing since the archive.”

“Good.” She settled against him. “Then we’re agreed.”

“We don’t have to name it tonight,” she agreed. Kissed his shoulder. The skin pulsed hot under her lips. “But, Chaos?”

“Yes.”

“The scales respond to what the dragon considers essential.”

“Yes.”

“They didn’t stop. The entire time. They were there the whole time we—” She gestured at the rumpled bed, the discarded clothes, the general aftermath of what had happened in this room. “The dragon considered the whole thing essential.”

Silence. The shimmer at his shoulder brightened—a single pulse, like a heartbeat made visible.

“Yes,” he said. “The dragon considers you essential.”

She pressed her face into his shoulder. The glow warmed her cheek.

The double-beat of his heart drummed against her ear. Manhattan glittered beyond the glass and the convention’s light cycled its villain sequence below them—his world and hers, converging at this altitude, in this room, in the glowing aftermath of a first time that had been seven weeks in the making and a lifetime overdue.

Her phone buzzed again. She reached for it without lifting her head from his chest.

CRYSTAL: I don’t know what just happened but the vibes shifted. My Crystal-sense is tingling. Report when able.

GISELLE: The security rotation logged Alani entering the penthouse at 11:47 PM. It is now 1:23 AM. The hard drive delivery should have taken five minutes.

Alani typed with one hand, her cheek still pressed to the warm, faintly glowing skin of a dragon’s shoulder.

ALANI: The hard drive has been delivered.

CRYSTAL: And?

ALANI: And the Dragon King considers me essential.

CRYSTAL: !!!

GISELLE: I need context for that statement.

ALANI: Not tonight you don’t.

CRYSTAL: Are you happy?

She looked at Chaos. He had closed his eyes. His breathing had steadied. The silver had fully reclaimed his irises—the gold gone, the dragon settled, the man at rest for the first time since she’d met him. His hand still rested on her waist. His thumb still traced its slow circle on her hip. The scale-shimmer at his shoulders pulsed its faint, steady rhythm—a light that no one else had ever seen, offered to no one else, the dragon’s most involuntary truth made visible against his skin.

ALANI: Yeah. I’m happy.

She put the phone down. Pressed closer. The October night held them—the city below, the convention glowing, the dragon and the woman who had called him a lizard and a king and was beginning to understand that both were true.

The shimmer pulsed. His heartbeat drummed. She closed her eyes.

Essential.

The word stayed.
