She was so busy watching Five that I had to nudge her. With a deep breath, she wrapped her arms around me. “I might end up in jail tonight—”
“Don’t. Not even worth it. At the fuck all,” I told her, serious as hell. I wish she would trip for real over Five’s poor ass.
We pulled away from the hug, said our I love you’s and I walked out of the building. As soon as I did, a black Yukon swooped up in front of the building, getting Vellz and his boys’ attention.
“Fuck is that?” Vellz mumbled.
“Shit, we about to find out,” his boy said, brandishing his gun.
The window slowly rolled down, exposing a pair of brown, familiar eyes. When he rolled it down more, I recognized him as Rocc. Sucking my teeth, I pushed through the crowd and walked up to the truck.
“Why are you here?” I asked, with an attitude.
“To take you home. Get in,” he said, eyeing me up and down. “You've been drinking.”
“Sure have. I have an Uber—’
“Big Dawg sent for you. I figured you had enough fun,” he interrupted, totally disregarding what I’d said.
“Ay, she said she good, my mans,” Vellz said, stepping towards the truck.
Rocc snorted, snatched his gaze away from me and put them on Vellz. He shifted his truck in park, and I stepped back as he opened the door. Stepping out, he towered over Vellz 5’7 frame. That didn’t make Vellz back down though. He tilted his head back, eyes locked on Rocc’s like he knew he could knock him out regardless. His boys lingered behind, hands on their burners, ready for whatever. All unnecessary shit.
I rolled my eyes. “Move,” I said to Vellz.
He sucked his teeth and looked over his shoulder at me. “Man, what?”
“I said move,” I repeated as I made my way around the truck. “Come on,” I said to Rocc.
Did I want to ride with him? Hell no. What did he mean Big Dawg sent for me? Big Dawg needed to mind his muthafuckin business. Ain’t no telling how long Rocc had been up here probably watching me. Shit was weird. I didn’t like it at all.
Rocc lingered around a little. Maybe for a good ten seconds before he finally got back into the truck. As expected, Vellz walked over to my side of the truck and said a few words. Tried to at least. Before he could get a full sentence out, Rocc was burning off from in front of the building.
I reclined my seat and lowered my window.
Closing my eyes, I enjoyed the feeling of the cool breeze sweeping across my face. Murky smell and all.
“You know… you can’t move the way you used to move, right?” Rocc said, interrupting my peace.
I cracked my left eye open, glaring at him. “What?”
“You work for the Christ family. The job you on… it’s a big one. Your safety is as important to him as his own.”
Before I could respond, Rocc turned the volume to the radio up, practically telling me that the conversation was over. I didn’t have anything to say anyway. The soft sound of Sade carrying us out of The Woods was good enough.
At some point I must’ve fallen asleep. I was jarred awake by Rocc softly shoving me. When I opened my eyes, the world around me began to spin. The liquor I had for sure hit my system fully.
Slowly, I unhooked my seatbelt and wiped slob from my mouth. A second later, Rocc was out, opening my door for me.
“Thank you,” I muttered, as I staggered towards the big house.
Big ass house.
Was too much of a house for First Lady. She only went two places in the whole place. The living room and her bedroom. Three, if you counted her bathroom. I’d been staying here for over a week and I still hadn’t explored. Didn’t feel like I had the right to, to be honest.
When I made it to the door, I put the code in and walked inside. The fresh smell of laundry hit my nostrils as I came out of my shoes and then headed towards the living room. My feet across the smooth marble floors glided and the kid in me couldn’t resist doing a little slide down the hallway. Either it was the kid in me or the liquor. Whatever the case, I did a little ‘skating’ motion until I made it to the drop into the living room. I was surprised to see that First Lady wasn’t there. The TV was off too.
Plopping down on the couch, I tossed my head back against the soft material and closed my eyes. As soon as I did, I saw Meech’s face and those wild ass locs. Swallowing, I sat in the memory. I didn’t shake it away. Didn’t run from it. Didn’t jump up to distract myself. I just let it be. It was of him the day he died. My view was from his bedrooms doorway. He was moments from pulling his shiesty down over his face. I swallowed again as I thought about giving him the crystal. On instinct, my hand went to it. I wore it around my neck all of the time now. I had several crystals but this one? It never left my neck. Not since I got it back from the coroner.
