Sure, there were a lot of people and it was hard to get noticed. However, Cal had already gotten the message and Ian was still flailing his arms around.
I groaned. There was something desperate about the way Ian continued to wave while Cal was already walking towards us.
No, Nate. It’s not a good idea to kill your best friend during his engagement party.
I didn’t want to talk to Cal this badly. Ok, maybe I did, but first impressions always counted.
Cal didn’t have to think I was dying to talk to him. It was already bad enough that I couldn’t take my eyes off him as he made his way towards us.
I started to notice little details about Cal. The way his jeans enveloped his muscular thighs.
The little scar he had just above his eyebrow. And now that he was even closer, the golden flecks in his blue eyes.
“Hey,” Cal said.
His voice was rich and deep. A low rumble that went straight to the center of my chest, like an arrow hitting its target. Bullseye.
I needed to busy myself so I didn’t get lost in those baby blues, to hold on to something to ground me.
I looked around and grabbed a glass of champagne from one of the servers passing by.
Cal looked at me expectantly, the same curious expression he had on his face before.
It was like he was waiting for me to say or ask him something, but what?
“Oh look, I think Owen needs my help,” Ian said, glancing over his shoulder.
I took a quick look at where Owen was and raised a brow. Owen was laughing and chatting with some old ladies. I doubt he really needed help with that.
When I turned back, Ian was gone. Cal and I were alone.
I rolled my eyes. Could Ian be more obvious?
“Those must be some scary old ladies, huh?” I remarked sarcastically to Cal.
Although Cal gave me the smallest of smiles, it was one that I could feel all the way down to my toes. My throat suddenly felt dry.
I took a big gulp of champagne and regretted it immediately. Disgusting. I wasn’t a fan of alcohol and rarely drank.
I noticed Cal didn’t have a drink in his hand. That comforted me.
Cal seemed like he wanted to say something again, but didn’t. I couldn’t stand the silence any longer.
“So you’re Owen’s best man. Have you known him long?” I asked.
“Yes,” Cal replied, but didn’t go on.
“Any special plans for his bachelor’s party?” I asked.
I gave him a pointed look that screamed, ‘please say something more than a one-word answer’.
“No,” Cal said.
Still nothing. What was up with this guy? More importantly, what was up with me? I could just turn around and find someone else to talk to, but I didn’t.
I noticed Cal now had an annoyed look on his face. Fascinating. This was my new game, my entertainment for the evening.
I was determined to crack him. I was like a code breaker, I just needed to figure out the right key to decipher him.
