“But we’re friends,” Essie said.
“And we meet in each other’s homes,” Althea added. “We’re not exactly a shadow government.”
Cece gave a small, humorless smile. “Darcy hasn’t come out and said we’re doing anything wrong yet, but she’s certainly laying the groundwork so she can make it sound like we are.”
Paige leaned back in her chair, her ire raised. “So what’s her plan then?”
Cece went back to reading. “She told the room she’s considering formally raising the issue with the Colony board. Not as a complaint but as a request for clarification and enforcement.”
Silence fell hard and fast.
Maude broke it first. “She’s trying to force us to let anyone in. Or maybe she just wants to shut us down.”
“Or both,” Cece said. “If she and Gigi can’t belong, no one can.”
Paige nodded slowly. It was clear now. This wasn’t about inclusion or community. It was still about leverage. About control.
“Well,” Paige said at last, her voice calm, “I suppose that answers the question of whether Darcy plans to mind her own business.”
Althea’s eyes narrowed. “I’d say she’s just declared war. Politely.”
Paige allowed herself a small smile. “I guess being a Queen Bee just got a lot more interesting. If any of you want to quit—”
“Don’t even say that,” Cece said. “We aren’t quitting.” She looked around. “Are we?”
They all shook their heads, their eyes full of determination.
“Thank you.” Paige knew one thing for certain.
Darcy Lane had underestimated them.
And that was a mistake she was going to regret.
