“Aportal?” I ask, looking up at Jayce as Aunty Ri casts the spell to open a portal. We’ve walked just outside the pack border, outside of the wards that are in place.

“Yeah, it’s perfectly safe,” Jayce replies as the portal opens. I can smell the sea breeze; it’s dark out there.

I tilt my head and shake my head. “I would never question you on that.”

“Well, we’ll see you in a few days,” Aunty Ri says as she holds the portal open for us.

My eyes widen, my heart skipping a beat. “A few days?” I look at Jayce, who smirks. He’s holding two suitcases in one hand, one of which is mine.

“I think I deserve to have you all to myself for my birthday, wouldn’t you agree?”

I smile, nodding. “I do.”

We need it – this time alone to just catch up and be together.

“Great, now off you go. Leo is expecting your return to work once you’re back, so enjoy these few days and try getting some rest, too,” Aunty Ri says with a smirk.

“Aunty!”

She laughs before motioning us through. “Go; this portal is exhausting.”

“Thank you.” I give her a quick kiss on the cheek, and she smiles at me.

“Have fun,” she adds with a wink. I nod, turning to the portal.

“Thanks, Raihana,” he says before he takes my hand and steps through. I feel the pull of the portal, feeling Aunty Ri’s magic, and I look at Jayce sharply.

“Where are we?” I ask, knowing we’re no longer in England. Aunty Ri’s portals are exceptional, and she is able to open them across the ocean, too, although they take a toll.

We are in an open place; I can hear the waves crashing onto the shore, smell the breeze, see the trees that surround the gated properties, and when I turn to the right, I can see the vast sea that spreads far and wide.

“We are at a villa my dad owns in Spain,” Jayce replies.

I look up at him in surprise. “I never knew you had a villa out here.”

“Yeah, we don’t really go on holidays. I’ve been here once, but it’s been used as a safe house and a stopover between missions in this area. It’s protected, but for the next few days it’s all ours.”

“That’s amazing. When did you even plan this?”

“Last night, when I decided I couldn’t deny what I felt any longer.”

I look up at him and tiptoe to tug him closer, kissing his lips softly.

“That’s so sweet.”

“I wouldn’t use the word sweet,” he answers as he leads me towards the gate to the villa in front of us.

“Well, I would.”

The moment he unlocks the gate and steps inside, I feel the ripple of power and smile. Mama reinforced this one. I love that I’m able to recognise people’s magic. It’s not easy, but those I’m familiar with are just that much easier to detect.

He leads the way up the rock-lined path, through the garden, which is gorgeous, and up the steps to the entrance. Unlocking the front door, we step inside, and he switches the lights on.
