“I should have been there… Maybe shit wouldn’t have turned out like this.”

Kiara presses her forehead to mine, still cupping my face.

“You’re trying to carry the weight of a choice you didn’t make. None of this is your fault.”

“But I still have to fucking live with the repercussions.”

Silence settles between us.

Because there aren’t any words capable of making this better.

“We’ll get through this,” she whispers softly.

I let out a humourless laugh. “Will we?”

“Yes.”

And I don’t know if it’s fucking true, but right now, I’ll let myself believe it, because otherwise I don’t know if I’ll fucking survive this.

By the River

Jayce

Sienna sighs as she leans back against me. Raihana had texted earlier this afternoon that she’d told Uncle Alejandro. He took it hard, even though he tried to keep it together.

I lock my arms around Sienna, resting my head on top of hers.

“He’ll be fine,” I say quietly.

She hums, not a yes, not a no, because I know she’s thinking of the bigger picture.

Of how Allie will react, how it’ll affect everyone, and that’s a fair point. It’s probably a lot for Aunty Kiara, too. I know Grandma was also worried about them when she was notified earlier by Aunty Kiara.

“Try not to worry about everyone for a while?” I murmur.

“Easier said than done, Handsome.”

“I know, but at least try.”

For a moment, she relaxes slightly, a little amusement playing on her gorgeous face as we look out at the river. We’re at the Blood Moon Pack, and the sun is almost setting in the sky. Everyone has returned to their respective destinations, and Sienna came with me. Right now, we sit on the ground enjoying the silence surrounding us.

We’ve not told anyone else about the pregnancy yet, with everything going on. It’s just not the right time, and it’s a big deal for us.

“Leo said he’s spoken to the vampires,” I say after a while, my thumb brushing down Sienna’s arm. “As long as the drakaths don’t attack them, which they won’t, they’ll allow them to remain there.”

She stills slightly, then exhales.

“Good, because I don’t know where we’d put an army of monsters in little old England.”

I smirk at that. “Makes sense. Did you just tell them to survive and stay alert until you call on them?” I ask, genuinely curious how they work.

She nods. “It’s kind of like that; they can continue existing. I don’t need to guide every action. So, I told them not to attack anyone unless I command it, so I still have that connection, as I’m basically the conduit, like I’m the Will. Does this make sense?”

“It actually does.”

“They’re strange. I don’t even know what they need, Jayce. What they eat, if they sleep. They were born in that place, and to think they need nothing to survive is equally incredible as it is terrifying. They were made for war, and to think they can live and survive for centuries without need of anything… That’s ominous.”

“Strange isn’t the word I’d use, but yeah, I get it. They aren’t of this world after all; it’s just further proof of the calibre of the immortals.” I brush my lips across her neck, brushing some of her tumbling curls out of the way and smirk. “If our kid has your hair, it will need a haircut every 2 weeks.”
