I didn’t plan to give him more than a good scare. But after everything that happened tonight, and finding out how much of a shithead this guy is, I’ve changed my mind.

There’s only one way to show my girl I’m serious.

A real gift this time.

No distractions. Nothing or no one will come between us.

This motherfucker will hurt. It’ll take a few seconds for me to snap his neck and do what I need to do with the body. Tomorrow, she’ll find out.

I grab my phone and watch her sleep on my screen.

She has no idea what’s coming. My little whore. My wife. Asleep in nothing but a see-through cotton nightgown, with a pillow between her legs, needy.

I push the phone back into my pocket and get out of the car.

The dark alley ahead of me is the perfect spot to do this. We’re a few hours from daylight, and no one will stumble upon this place unless they know where to look. I know my way around town. I spent way too many nights wandering around, looking for the best hideaways for bodies.

I stand in front of the trunk and click it open, welcoming my guest of honor for the night with a twisted smirk on my face. A face covered by the same neon mask I was supposed to welcome Maddy in.

Even if I let him live, he would never be able to identify me.

I crouch by the trunk and tap his forehead with enough force to startle him awake.

“P-please,” he stutters between spitting blood. “L-let me live. I’ll give you anything.”

I don’t talk. What I want from him has no price.

Let there be no misunderstanding that this is a mere result of her doings. My wife. She needs to understand that when I say something, I need to be taken seriously.

Well, and his. He’s no good guy either. No matter how much he wants to put up appearances. A quick search of his car gave me more than enough evidence of it.

But most of all, I’m doing this to protect her. For Maddy.

She’s my greedy little sinner, and I’m a monster. A monster that’s willing to get his hands dirty for her.

Stained in crimson, splatters of it on my knife as I dig my blade into my victim’s neck. He had no idea this was coming. That his life would be cut short because of his lousy actions, all because of one night.

Stab. Stab. Stab.

I’ve made up my mind, and there’s no going back.

He screams until his voice gives out.

It doesn’t last long, and I savor every second until the light leaves his eyes.

“This is what happens when you play with what isn’t yours.”

A satisfying grunt comes out of my mouth.

It’s the most basic thing in the world. They teach it to kids.

You don’t play with someone else’s toys without their permission. You don’t take.

You don’t steal. If you do, bad things happen. Sometimes, you die.

Well, maybe that’s a bit out of the ordinary, but that’s how we do it in my playground.

I’m very patient. I may give you a warning if you catch me on a good day, but I’m not the forgiving kind.
