Niccolò answers on the first ring. “Enzo.”

“The diplomatic mission is officially concluded, Don Niccolò,” I report. “The situation in Palermo has transitioned into an active ground war. The vineyard summit was a coordinated trap.”

“Giancarlo informed me of the blast,” my brother replies. “He is currently holding the hotel perimeter with the remaining guards. Detail the events.”

“I arrived, expecting a private negotiation with Don Vitiello. Instead, Roberto was occupying the center of the reception hall,” I reveal. “He is funding the Volkovs, attempting to leverage the Sicilian families to reclaim the throne. But before the terms could be finalized, a massive car bomb detonated in the front courtyard. The blast decimated the villa and wiped out the majority of the Vitiello security detail. I managed to extract myself before the secondary sweep.”

Niccolò processes the variables with the ruthless speed that earned him the crown. “Roberto surviving his exile is a complication we will rectify, but the bomb changes the parameters of the board. Don Vitiello is a greedy, short-sighted fool, but he is not suicidal. If he invited Roberto to his estate, he intended to form an alliance. The explosion was not his doing.”

“Agreed,” I confirm, pouring a glass of tap water and taking a slow sip. “Which means a third party intervened. Someone possessing the capital and the ordnance to strike a heavily fortified compound in broad daylight.”

“Or, the Vitiello family decided to clean the board entirely,” Niccolò theorizes. “Think about it, Enzo. If the Don or his ambitious lieutenants wipe out Roberto, they absorb his remaining war chest. If they take you out simultaneously, they sever my primary strategist, blinding Boston to their movements. And if they kill Elena Vitiello in the crossfire, they consolidate the local power structure without any internal opposition.”

“It is a plausible hypothesis,” I concede, turning to look down the hallway toward the closed bedroom door. “However, the plan failed to achieve a total wipeout. Roberto fled through the rear exits before the dust settled. And Elena is currently with me. I pulled her from the wreckage and forced her to guide me through the alleys. She brought me to an undocumented location.”

I deliberately omit the fact that we slept with each other in the porcelain bathtub.

“She is a valuable asset,” Niccolò decrees. “Extract whatever intelligence she possesses regarding the local hierarchies. Find out exactly who planted those explosives, Enzo. I want the architects of this ambush identified, and I want them eradicated. You have full authorization to mobilize Giancarlo and the tactical squads. Do whatever is necessary to sanitize the island.”

“I will get to the bottom of this,” I promise, severing the connection and setting the phone on the granite counter.

I remain in the kitchen, watching the sun crest over the horizon, painting the Palermo skyline in brilliant shades of gold and burnt orange. The sounds of the awakening city bleed through the reinforced glass, a deceptive normalcy returning to the streets while the criminal underworld undoubtedly scrambles to process the bombing. I hear the soft, hesitant rustle of fabric from the corridor, signaling that the brilliant mastermind is finally awake.

Elena steps out of the shadows, wearing an oversized white dress shirts that falls mid-thigh, the crisp cotton swallowing her slender frame. Her dark hair is damp and slightly tangled, and her olive skin is completely devoid of the soot and blood that painted her features yesterday. She pauses in the hallway, her brown eyes tracking my presence in the kitchen before her gaze inevitably drops to my bare chest.

I see the microscopic tightening of her jaw as she studies the horrific, intersecting scars branding my torso. Roberto’s abuse is a strictly guarded family secret, a humiliating disgrace that the powerful Severato brothers endured in the dark, and I have absolutely no intention of offering her an emotional explanation for the damage. I reach for my ruined charcoal jacket draped over the sofa, pulling the garment over my shoulders to conceal the evidence of my former godfather's cruelty, shutting down her silent inquiry before she can vocalize a single question.

She respects the boundary, lifting her chin and walking toward the kitchen island, leaning her hip against the counter with a remarkable display of composure. The intoxicating, chaotic romance of the previous night is securely compartmentalized, locked away in a box so we can address the reality threatening to end our lives.

“You were on the phone,” Elena states, crossing her arms over her chest.

“I was updating my brother,” I confirm, abandoning the water to pour a generous measure of the whiskey I found in her cabinets, sliding a second glass across the counter toward her. “The situation requires a clinical assessment, Elena. We are both walking corpses. The bomb at the vineyard was not a warning shot, it was an execution order designed to eliminate everyone sitting at that table.”

She accepts the glass, taking a smooth swallow of the amber liquid without flinching. “My uncle lacks the tactical sophistication to orchestrate an explosion of that magnitude, and he would never risk his own life to eliminate Roberto. Which means one of his Capos went rogue, or a rival syndicate decided to exploit the meeting to wipe out the Vitiello leadership and the Severato envoy in one localized strike.”

“Your analysis matches my own,” I reply, stepping closer, closing the distance until the scent of her skin fills my lungs. “The architects of this ambush failed, but they will not stop hunting us. Giancarlo is currently holding down my hotel, but my resources on this island are limited to the men I brought on the jet. You, however, possess a highly sophisticated, invisible infrastructure that operates directly beneath the noses of your enemies. I found the servers, Elena. I know exactly what kind of shadow empire you are running from this apartment.”

Her eyes widen a fraction of an inch, a flash of genuine surprise that I managed to uncover her hidden command center while she slept, but she quickly masks the vulnerability behind a cool, impressed smirk.

“I propose an alliance, temporarily of course,” I state, leaning my forearms on the counter to bring my face level with hers, establishing the parameters of a deadly business transaction. “We combine our assets. You provide the localized intelligence, the secure communication lines, and the layout of the warring factions. I provide the brute force, the tactical funding, and the necessary violence to execute the targets. We locate the men who planted the explosives, we dismantle their operation, and we restructure the board to suit our mutual interests.”

Elena studies my face, her mind racing through the probabilities of my proposition. She understands that refusing my offer means facing a multitude of assassins entirely alone, whereas aligning herself with the Severato Consigliere guarantees protection.

“A temporary alliance,” she repeats, her tongue darting out to wet her lower lip, a minuscule gesture that sends a vicious spike of heat straight to my groin. “And what happens to this alliance once the board is cleared, Enzo? What happens when Roberto Severato is dealt with, and the men who bombed my family's estate are buried in the dirt?”

“We cross that bridge when we are no longer standing in the crosshairs,” I answer, extending my hand across the granite surface, offering the formal seal of a syndicate contract. “Do we have a deal?”

She looks at my extended palm, a brilliant, incredibly dangerous smile curving her mouth. She places her hand in mine, her grip remarkably strong. “We have a deal, Consigliere.”

I stand before the bank of glowing monitors, pulling up the encrypted dossiers I spent years meticulously compiling, laying the vulnerabilities of the Vitiello syndicate bare for the foreign predator occupying my safehouse. Enzo leans against the office doorframe, his imposing frame clad in my spare clothing, watching me manipulate the digital hierarchy with an assessing gaze that misses nothing.

“The Vitiello organization is a crumbling edifice, held together by misplaced pride and my uncle's frantic attempts to maintain the illusion of control,” I begin, tapping a manicured fingernail against the photograph of a scowling, thick-necked man on the center screen. “Don Vitiello relies on the loyalty of men who despise his incompetence. This is Salvatore Russo, the underboss who commands the eastern shipping lanes. Salvatore has the capital to hire outside ordnance and has spent the better part of a decade complaining about the diminishing profit margins my uncle secures. He operates with a reckless ambition that my uncle is far too arrogant to recognize. If anyone in my family has the resources to plant a car bomb at a diplomatic summit, aiming to eradicate the reigning patriarch and the Severato envoy in one spectacular strike, it is Salvatore.”

Enzo steps into the cramped confines of the room, his ice-blue eyes scanning the detailed logistical notes and financial discrepancies I attached to the underboss's profile. “If Russo is the architect, he will undoubtedly attempt to consolidate his power today, rallying the remaining Capos under the guise of an emergency succession,” the Consigliere deduces, his mind already formulating a counter-offensive. “I will contact Giancarlo and instruct him to organize a specialized strike team to intercept Russo before he can establish a fortified perimeter around his estate.”
