“Because it isn’t regional. It’s Solaris shorthand. Early clerks used it when settlers gave land names before formal coordinates were mapped.”

“Who taught you that?”

“My mother. Who learned it from Mayor Reeve. Who probably learned it from someone older and more stubborn.”

I study the mark again. I’d nearly dismissed it as decorative damage.

Lucy crosses her arms. “Still think family records are just stories?”

“I never said just.”

“You implied it loudly.”

Despite myself, I look at her. “Your interpretation may be useful.”

“That sounded painful.”

“It was accurate.”

Her mouth twitches before she looks away.

The archive door opens, and a young clerk enters carrying a sealed metal case. “Found this in the municipal cold cabinet,” he says. “Mayor says Specialist Veyr asked for anything tagged pre-cooperative.”

I accept the case and scan the seal. Old. Local. Broken once, then resealed under a different authority.

My attention sharpens.

Inside lie three storage wafers and a printed index sheet yellowed at the edges. I read the first ten entries, then the next ten.

A gap appears where there should be continuity.

Founding survey. Water rights. Shrine land. Burial hills. Cooperative charter.

Then nothing.

The index jumps forward thirty-two years.

I turn the sheet over. No continuation. No damage mark. No transfer note.

Lucy has gone still beside me. “What’s missing?”

“Original settlement protections, if they existed. Early covenant references. Land-use restrictions. Anything that could limit later commercial claims.”

“Could it be stored somewhere else?”

“Possibly.”

“But you do not think so.”

I look again at the clean jump in the index. Too clean.

“No,” I say. “I do not.”

The room seems smaller after that.

Above us, footsteps move across the cooperative hall floor. Voices rise and fall, families arguing over papers and fear. Somewhere, a child laughs once, quickly hushed.

Lucy touches the corner of the index sheet but doesn’t move it. “Someone took them.”
