“This is neither.”

The mark warmed again, heat spreading beneath her skin in a slow, deliberate line that refused to be ignored.

His gaze dropped briefly—not to her face, but to the place where the mark lay hidden beneath her collarbone.

“You carved it,” she said. “Or your wolves did.”

His eyes lifted back to hers.

“It was done under my command,” he said.

“This was necessary to you.”

He held her gaze, not dismissing the question, but not softening it either.

“It was necessary,” he said, “once Vargan committed himself to that union.”

“For Ironfang.”

“For the balance between us,” he corrected quietly. “Ironfang simply acted first.”

She did not look away.

“And for yourself?”

This time the pause held longer.

“For Ironfang,” he said again, though the repetition carried less certainty than before.

She held his gaze, letting the silence stretch just enough to make the answer feel incomplete.

The memory of firelight brushed the edge of her thoughts—a shadow leaning close, the sharp edge of pain—but it slipped away before she could hold it.

She forced her attention back to him.

He stood here in the open, fully visible, entirely composed.

And yet—

“Then why,” she asked quietly, “does it not feel like territory?”

The space between them tightened, no longer empty but drawn taut, like a line pulled too hard between two fixed points.

The mark pulsed again, sharper this time, heat spreading beneath her skin before settling low in her chest. She did not move, though the instinct to step back flickered briefly at the edges of her awareness.

He closed the distance by a single step.

Not enough to touch.

Close enough to be felt.

“You’re outside the system you were trained in,” he said. “Your body is reacting to unfamiliar conditions. It reads proximity as a variable it hasn’t learned to ignore yet.”

She watched him carefully, not for softness, but for the smallest fracture in control.

“And yours?” she asked. “Is it unaffected?”

A shadow passed across his expression—subtle, contained.
