The noise of the hall pressed closer again—laughter breaking somewhere to their left, a cup set down too hard against wood, the low murmur of voices threading through the space—but it no longer blurred the edges of the moment.
“You speak as if it’s already decided,” she said at last.
“It is,” he replied.
Eira held his gaze a moment longer, then looked down briefly, not in concession, but as if recalibrating something that no longer fit the way it had before.
When she reached for the bread again, her grip was steadier.
Chapter 18: The Messenger
Soren
Silence, in Ironfang, was not mistaken for safety; it marked the point at which a response had already begun to form.
By the third evening after the hunt, the scouts brought confirmation of what had long since been expected. Frostvein would answer, and they would do so in a way that could be seen as clearly as it could be interpreted.
The messenger arrived at dusk, alone.
That choice was not restraint so much as design. A single rider allowed for multiple readings, and Frostvein relied on that ambiguity as deliberately as on force.
The gates opened without hesitation.
He dismounted without display, lowering his hood only once he had crossed into the courtyard. Frostvein grey marked him plainly, though faint traces of ceremonial white still lingered along the seams, as if the ritual had not entirely released him.
He inclined his head—just enough to acknowledge rank without conceding position.
“Alpha.”
“State your message.”
The courtyard adjusted around them with quiet precision. Hunters slowed their return without breaking stride, altering their path just enough to remain within view. Women crossing between halls shifted course. Children were guided inside with a hand rather than a call.
Space gathered.
No one spoke.
The messenger’s gaze moved once, briefly, toward the east wing balcony before returning to Soren.
“Vargan of Frostvein acknowledges your claim.”
The word was left unqualified.
“On what terms do you acknowledge it?” Soren asked.
“That it has been made,” the messenger replied, “and that it has been seen.”
Soren held his gaze a moment longer than required.
“Continue.”
“Vargan requests confirmation that his daughter remains unharmed.”
“She stands under Ironfang covenant,” Soren said, his tone even. “Unharmed.”
The messenger inclined his head.
“Frostvein does not recognize the rite performed within its territory,” he continued. “Not as binding.”
