Leaning back in her chair she tried to follow the conversation around the table but within minutes she knew she had to get out of here and quickly.

“June,” she whispered as she got up. The whole room tilted and she grabbed on to her friend.

“Abby, what’s wrong?”

“I have to get home, please?”

“Of course.”

Carson had just spoken to Noah about the upcoming exhibition when his phone rang Friday night. It was Willow.

Frowning, he answered. Why would Willow phone him now?

“Get your butt up here,” Willow ordered without saying hello. “June and Dylan just took Abby back to her home. She’s not feeling well. There is a flight tonight just before midnight. It has one stop. Otherwise the only one tomorrow is …”

Willow’s voice droned on while Carson stared at his phone, his mind struggling to make sense of what he’d just heard. Abby had been fine while she was here. What could be wrong?

“Carson!” Willow called out. “Focus! When do you want to leave?”

Even while he was checking his watch, he was already on his way to his room. It was half past nine. “Tonight. And thank you.”

“Great. Sending you the details.”

Another text came in. This time from Cooper.

Leave George with Isabella, she’s expecting him.

Grateful for this crazy, wonderful family he got to call his own, but seriously worried about Abby, Carson quickly packed his bag.

George wasn’t sure what to make of the bag and got inside as well.

“I’ve got to go to see Abby, but you’ll be fine. Isabella will spoil you rotten.”

Within minutes, he was in his truck on his way to drop off George. Abby. Why was Abby not feeling well? Just the idea that she was not feeling well had him stepping on the gas the moment he was on the road.

“Promise me you’ll see a doctor as soon as possible?” June said, still looking worried.

“I’m telling you, I’m fine. I haven’t been sleeping well, but I don’t have any appointments tomorrow morning and will sleep later.”

“But you’ll see a doctor?”

“If I still feel unwell, yes, but I’ll be fine. I’ll see you at the book launch tomorrow evening. I’m so sorry I’ve ruined your evening.”

June gave her a hug. “Abby, you’re my only family, you can’t ruin anything for me. You haven’t eaten, let me order dinner for you?”

“Don’t be silly, I’m not ill. I can do that.” Moving to her front door quickly, she opened it. “Now, off you go and celebrate with the family.”

“You’re sure we can’t take you to a hospital?” Dylan asked.

Abby smiled. “I’m totally fine. It’s just been a crazy two weeks, but I’m really okay.”

After a few more assurances from her side that she was fine, Dylan and June finally left. With a sigh of relief Abby closed the door behind them. She hated to be fussed about.

Pressing a hand on her tummy that was still a bit unwell, she took out her phone to order something to eat, but just the idea of food had her running to the bathroom.
