“Hello.” The redhead with black eyes smiles at me, and I catch a hint of fang.

Another human mated to a Vadas brother.

“Holy hells.” I whisper it this time.

This definitely counts as crazy shit.

“He is usually cooler,” Volik says to his brother.

I shake my head, trying to clear it. “It’s been a while since I’ve played poker.” I look at my watch. “Not to be rude, but unless this is how you want to announce…” I gesture at the new pair. “You should probably get inside. Or… go somewhere. Because classes will⁠—”

A door elsewhere slams open, and voices float through the air, finishing the point for me.

Volik turns to Vameer. “My home. Follow me.”

Vameer nods.

Volik jumps.

Nix jumps.

Vameer lifts his mate into his arms, dips his chin at me, then he follows the others into the sky.

Chapter 72

Vameer

Rune lays her head on my shoulder as we follow Volik and his mate over the nearby forest. “I like them.”

“Good.” I flex my arms around her. “I trust the fates to give Volik a good mate.”

I feel my mate smile. “I always wondered what it would be like to have a sibling. Now I have a sister and a brother.”

I nuzzle my cheek against Rune’s hair. “Tonight I want you to tell me about your family.”

“There’s not much. Just me and my parents, really.”

“I still want to hear about them. And your childhood. I want to know everything.” I inhale her sweet apples. “Since I woke, things have been… chaotic.”

Rune huffs a laugh. “Just a bit.”

She is so understanding. Of everything.

“Mon Amour.” I murmur my feelings for her.

Our heart rate jumps as Rune tightens her arms around my neck. “I’ll tell you everything. But to start, my childhood was good. My constant need to move was apparently you. And… I took four years of French in high school.”

I turn my head and press my lips to her hair. “Fille intelligente.”

Volik and Nix start to slow ahead of us. And I’m looking forward to spending time with Volik and his mate, but I’m glad for this moment of privacy.

Rune twines her fingers in my hair. “I want to know everything about you too. All of it.”

I told her the basics about the fighting. The exhaustion. The need to rest that led me to the cave.

So she knows what she’s asking for.
