The car’s passenger door opens.

I run toward it and get there in time to see a woman falling out onto the pavement.

“Oh my gods, are you okay?” I close the distance and crouch beside her. “What just happened?”

Her mouth moves, but only broken bits of sound come out.

I look over her and see a man in the driver’s seat. He’s slumped forward but twitching, like he’s trying to move.

The woman reaches a hand toward the fleeing cops.

“Did they take your do—” I look into the back seat. At the empty kid’s car seat.

I turn my head.

The two men are at the helicopter now.

My heart sinks to my stomach.

What is happening?

The woman rolls onto her back. Arches her neck. And howls.

I fall back, catching myself against the vehicle, as every hair on my body lifts.

The sound is horrible.

Filled with pain and anguish. And something… darker.

A promise of retaliation.

The helicopter lifts from the ground, taking its noise with it.

And that’s how I hear it.

The answering howl. From miles away.

Chapter 122

Orion

Alog pops in the fireplace. And I open my eyes.

The low flames flicker orange illumination around the room.

Lifting my head from the back of the chair, I rub a hand down my face. “Fuck me.”

The damned hunting dreams are getting worse. And if I don’t get a full night’s sleep soon…

I lean forward, and the old chair groans with me.

Shifter healing means I shouldn’t wake up sore. But the last few weeks have been different.

My muscles feel tight. My joints seem to protest every move I make. Even my bones ache. Every one of them.

I’m the Alpha of Argus Pack. And whatever is going on with me is making me feel about a century older than I am.

I stare into the fireplace.
