A human screams as four eagles lift him into the air and start to fly him over the clearing toward the portal.

“No.” Haruto waves his arms. “I said parts.”

The eagles drop the screaming human.

The screaming increases when Orion jumps up and catches the human by the hip. But the screaming stops when he violently shakes his head, helping to create parts for the eagles.

Haruto lets out something akin to a bird call. Then he runs back through his portal.

The eagles angle down, speeding through the portal after him in a single-file line.

When the last eagle disappears, the portal snaps shut.

My body vibrates with rage.

This is not fair.

He was not supposed to come with this many.

I need to find my priest.

I need more guards.

Orion barks, drawing our attention as he darts to the edge of the clearing.

I reclaim my gravito, dissolving the wall, then I throw it up and out. Toward the guns.

The gunfire goes silent, making our footsteps sound loud, but we keep running.

Orion rounds a cluster of trees, taking us farther away from the fight.

Nix is at my side, and Bridget is behind us.

We turn where Orion turned. And a vampire jumps straight for us.

But Bridget beats him.
