I need to know. And I need to be prepared.
“Have you heard of a vampire named Volik?” My chest aches as my heart tries to race.
Please, fates. Let him be alive.
The man’s eyes widen as he stares at me. “Everyone has heard of Volik.”
That ache increases. “Is he alive?”
“You know him?” There’s caution in his voice.
“He is my brother.” My words are thick. “Is he alive?”
The man nods. “Volik lives. Your brother’s alive.”
I close my eyes.
I close them, tip my head back, and breathe.
Volik.
Emotion gathers beneath my lids.
Thank the gods.
My little brother is still here.
The door creaks, then closes.
Alone, I open my eyes and look up at the stars.
Chapter 13
Volik
Steam lifts around me as I stand in the woods in front of the house.
It clouds my vision, but I do not move.
It has been hours since I felt it.
Since I felt my brother wake.
But I have spoken with everyone. Our family. The wolves. The druid. Searched all the media sources. And I cannot find any evidence of Vameer reappearing. There is not even a whisper.
I stare at the stars above.
He is out there.
He is awake.
My mouth starts to pull into a smile.
Vameer is awake. In a whole new world.
And what a different world it is.
