Kayla's eyes went wide, the double-take unguarded and genuine. "You're willingly letting strangers onto your land? And not shoot at them?"

"Work in progress," Vivi said, pressing her free hand lightly against his stomach—easy and natural, the way people who belonged to each other.

He looked down at where her hand rested and thought about the word belong. Thought about the way they were standing, the way they were touching, and the settled weight of having her pressed against his side.

"Does this mean Bridlewood will be home?" Kayla asked, eyes moving to Vivi.

Vivi's smile went bright—too bright.

"My job is in New York, so everything's still in flux. We're playing it by ear."

Boone looked at her. At his hat on her head, her hand still in his, and the way she'd stood beside him through the whole exchange without flinching.

In flux, she'd said.

In flux my ass.

He didn't argue or push—not in front of Kayla and her five-carat ring and her loafer-wearing husband.

But she was fucking his. He knew it and she knew it. She could call it flux all she wanted.

He'd wait.

Colter: Send a picture I need to see this crime against Montana

Boone: I was a little busy
