“Yeah, that one.”
“Did you lose it? Do you think you left it here?”
My hand instinctively grasped it and held it up so he could see. “No, I didn’t lose it.”
“Oh.” His brows creased.
“It’s actually pretty special. It’s been in my family for a really long time.”
“That’s cool.”
“Yeah. It is. Um. It’s unique.” I paused and shook my head. I was about to lose him. I could feel it. “It’s been passed down through all of the women in my family. From mother to daughter and through sisters.”
“That’s amazing. I wish my family had heirlooms like that.”
Uh huh. I bet he’ll take that back in a minute.
“Well, the necklace is more than just a family gem. It um. . .it’s special.”
“Yeah. April, you said that.” He laughed again. He probably thought I was crazy, and he wasn’t wrong.
“Ittellsyouwhenyoumetyourtruelove.”
Silence.
Another moment of silence.
I checked the screen. Was he frozen? He didn’t move.
“Liam?”
“Um, yeah. I’m here. I just. Umm. Sorry, what did you say?” His mouth tilted up, amused.
Oh, boy.
“The necklace isn’t normal jewelry. It’s really old and has the ability to let the person wearing it know...when they’ve met their true love.”
More silence.
I couldn’t handle it so I kept talking.
“When I got to NYC, the stone was clear, like a diamond. When I ran into you, I noticed in the reflection that it changed to red. That means...”
“That I’m your true love?”
Oh, so he was listening.
“Yes.”
“You saw your necklace change and knew it was me, so that’s why you asked me to meet you later.”
“Yes.”
He sounded calm and didn’t look like he was going to hung up and block my number. Yet. “Huh.”
Huh? That was it?
“Do you have any questions?”
