“I don’t...I don’t know, April. This is—This is a lot to take in.”

“I know. I wanted to tell you sooner but I didn’t know how.”

“Yeah. I get that.” He stared down, not meeting my eyes. “So why now?”

Well crap. I didn’t really, really didn’t want to have to say this part

“Uh well. There’s a time limit.”

His eyes shot up to mine. “A time limit? On what?”

“Oh, the necklace.”

“What does that mean? At midnight, it turns into a pumpkin?”

I let myself laugh with him for just a second to give myself a break from my mental anguish.

“Not quite. I have about a month.”

“For what?”

Oh, crapity crap on a stick. He was going to make me say it.

“A month to fall in love.”

“Huh.” He looked past the phone. Not another sound! I needed words! “Or what?”

A valid question. I took in a deep breath and released.

“Or it’s over. The necklace will no longer work. I can’t pass it down to the next girl in line.”

“You break the spell.” He asked carefully.

My jaw tightened. He was dead on, but saying it like that made it sound like some cartoon fairy tale.

“Basically.”

“So, to recap this magic necklace told you I’m your true love. We have less than a month to fall in love or the spell is broken and the necklace that has been in your family since forever is done.”

“Yup.”

“Huh.”

I was ready to jump on the next flight to NYC just to see him in person. To convince him I wasn’t crazy. I was the same girl he met. I couldn’t handle this for another second.

“Yeah. April. It’s late here, and I’ve got some work to do. Ummm, I’ll email you my play. And I’ll. . . talk to you soon.” He cleared his throat and only glanced up once.

Soon? As is never again. Well after I read his play. After he got what he wanted. Cool.

“Okay. Bye Liam.”

“Bye.” His face disappeared and I closed my eyes.

Holy crap, that probably could have gone worse, but right now it was hard to picture how.

Chapter 23

When I woke up, I debated for over three minutes whether or not I should look at my phone. I wasn’t expecting a message or missed call, but it would certainly help undo the knot in my stomach.
