“About what?”
“When you see him.”
“Nothing.”
“You’re not going to call him?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Text?”
“No.”
Maya pauses. “You don’t think you should say something?”
“I think a man who just ended a public engagement probably has enough people calling him.”
“That is fair.”
“If it comes up when I see him again, I will say I am sorry. That is it.”
Maya is quiet for a moment before asking, “And how have things actually been between you two?”
I look down at the notebook beside my laptop.
“Professional.”
“That is the third time you have said that.”
“Because it is true.”
“Okay.”
I can hear the smile in her voice.
“Do not start.”
“I am not starting anything.”
“You sound like you are.”
Maya laughs softly.
“Fine. I will behave.”
I glance at the time.
“How is Theo? He was sleeping last night when I called.”
“Good,” Maya says.
“I talked to Emma yesterday. She said he was trying to convince her to buy some ridiculous science kit.”
“That’s what she told me, too.”
“She said she told him no.”
“Good.”
