“It is.”
He fastens his watch around his wrist.
“The office should send you the travel details and access schedule before the end of the week.”
The word access lands differently now. I look at him for a moment, trying to process the information.
“You want me to come to Italy?
He turns and looks at me.
“Yes, I thought you were aware?”
“It was mentioned as a possibility, but I—”
“—Nothing’s changed.”
He says the words so abruptly, as his eyes pierce through mine.
“My office will confirm details and get you all squared away.”
“Daniel?”
“Probably Daniel, yes.”
His tone remains perfectly normal, which somehow makes the space between us more noticeable.
“Okay,” I say. “I’ll look out for it.”
“You’ll be back in NY later this week as well?” He asks.
“Yes.”
Julian gives a small nod. “Good.”
Neither of us seems to know what belongs after that. I turn toward the bathroom and take two steps before looking back.
“Last night wasn’t something I planned,” I say.
Julian’s eyes settle on mine.
“I know.”
“I don’t usually…” I stop myself before the sentence becomes an explanation neither of us needs.
“I just don’t make a habit of crossing professional lines.”
“Neither do I.”
The answer is direct, and there is no judgment in it.
I study his face. “Do you regret it?”
“No.”
He does not hesitate. Something inside me loosens.
“Do you?” Julian asks.
