“I’m assuming it’s a possibility.”

Myles stays silent for a moment. The thoughts rolling around in his head. “Have you tried your hardest to turn her down?”

“Yes, but there is something about her— I don’t know what it is. It’s almost like she’s putting me under a spell. Being around her, when she says or does things that make me feel things I shouldn’t, it’s like the devil on my shoulder kicked the angel off the other and is trying to plant himself in my head. No matter how hard I try, I lose the battle and listen to the little red guy.”

He nods slowly as he takes in what I say. “I can sit here and tell you what I think you should do, but it’s up to you. If she’s worth risking your job, then go for it. Don’t get caught. That’s my best advice.” He smirks. “The sneaking around? The adrenaline rush you get from maybe getting caught? It’s fucking hot! The patient or the nurse? Your choice, Leo.”

The choice should be simple. It should be an easy decision. Scarlet is who I should be choosing. It’s safe. But I’m not a safe person. Not with the women I normally take to my bed. In a moment like this, that needs to be switched around. I can’t be reckless with my career.

Safe.

The word repeats in my head, trying to ingrain itself into my brain, but something is blocking it from completely sinking in. Why the hell are the words the little devil is whispering in my ear persuading me to make the wrong choice?

Before I can even say anything in response, there is a knock at my door. “I gotta go. I’ll text you later.”

I don’t let him say anything back before I hang up the phone and go to the bedroom door. When I open it, I am met with Edith, who gives me an apologetic smile. Oh, no. Did Veronica ask her about the whole shower supervision thing?

“I’m so sorry to barge into your room on your own time, Leo.”

“That’s quite alright.” I wave her off. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes. Everything is fine,” she reassures me. “It’s just Veronica asked to speak with you. Well, demanded to.” Shit. “She said that you canceled her last session, and she desperately needed to talk but couldn’t find you. Hence why I’m here.”

I clear my throat. Relief floods my body because this isn’t about the shower situation. “Yes, I canceled because some things came up. As you know, I have a new patient starting next week. On top of that, I have to configure a new schedule for Veronica. I have to add an extra day.”

Edith nods. “I understand it’s Saturday, but she got into a fight the other day.”

“She what?” My eyes go wide until I remember the bruising under her eye when I saw her earlier.

“You didn’t hear?” She shakes her head in disapproval. Not with me but with Veronica. “I will let her tell you about it.”

“Okay, bring her to my office,” I tell her. “Let me change first, and then I’ll be there.”

Edith walks away, and I close the door. I don’t want to dress up in my usual attire for work, but I can’t meet Veronica in sweats. I change into black jeans and a black long-sleeve thermal, hoping they won’t get mad. I was not dressing professionally. Technically, it’s not even a proper workday.

I’m wandering down the office hallway in no time. I unlock my door, thankful that I beat Edith and Veronica. I head straight for my desk, palms rubbing my eyes as I prepare to see her.

“Dr. Madden?” Edith's voice causes my hands to fall to my sides. When I look at the older woman standing in my doorway, she isn’t looking at me. She is gesturing for someone to enter.

Soon enough, Veronica walks through the door, her hair still damp from her shower. My eyes dip quickly and discreetly trail down her body, finding she’s wearing a thin white tank top, nipples hard enough for me to see them through the fabric.

“Thank you, Edith.” I divert my eyes from Veronica to the woman standing behind her.

“Not a problem!” She smiles, reaches for the door handle, and shuts Veronica and me in.

When the door shutting sounds throughout the room, I bring my eyes back to Veronica, who has been watching me the entire time. Except now, she has that devilish smile plastered on her face.

That devil on my shoulder? He’s telling me I’m fucking doomed.

CHAPTER 19

Veronica

I stay standing here with the closed door at my back while Leo’s eyes wander down my body again. Now that we are alone, he takes his time. I’m sure Edith didn’t notice the first time he checked me out since she’s an older woman who most likely doesn’t pick up on stuff like that.

His eyes linger on my breasts, my hardened nipples poking against the tank top. I wore this on purpose, of course. The last time I was in this office, I noticed it was chilly. I figured, why not wear something thin to show myself off?

I take in his appearance, and damn, here I thought him in his work attire was sexy, but seeing him in casual wear? It causes me to ache for him.
