“Have you figured it out?” I ask. Maybe this nightmare is ending tonight.
“No. But I have a hell of a lot more questions.” She shoots a sideways glance to Ronan, but from my angle, I can’t see either of their eyes. Even so, it makes me feel edgy. Like they’re having a silent conversation.
And once again, I wonder if they’re an item. Either dating or friends-with-benefits or something equally naked and sweaty.
Reggie turns back to me and smiles, almost as if she’s resetting the room. “So other than bodies in your living room, how’ve you been? I haven’t seen you in a minute, but I heard something about a fashion show? Sounds cool.”
I want to know about Mr. Big, but the lure of talking about the Expo sucks me in. “Yeah, it’s very cool,” I tell her. “Most applications to the Expo for businesses my size are declined, so I was amazed when they chose me.”
A little tinge of worry settles in my gut. I still have a ton of work to do to get ready. I really don’t have time to be away from my studio which is inconveniently located in the den, uncomfortably close to where we found Mr. Big’s body.
“I’ll try to come,” Reggie says.
“What? Oh!” I force my thoughts back to the conversation. “You should. I go every year. There are a ton of booths, and I always find something darling, and—”
“Ladies,” Ronan interrupts. “I could talk fashion all day, but I’m guessing Reggie came here about something other than this year’s winter accessories.”
Reggie’s mouth twists, but she nods. “As much as I like this year’s colors, he’s right.” She focuses on me. “We need to talk. You both need to see something.”
“Oh.” Dread washes over me, and I feel a little sick. I turn to Ronan, but his expression has turned to stone, and I can’t read a thing.
I look between the two of them. “What is it? What’s going on?”
“That’s my question,” Ronan says.
Reggie hops off her stool and fetches her backpack from the sofa. She pulls out a laptop, then opens it up, and I come around so that I can see the screen, too.
Her fingernails are manicured and deep red, and they fly over the keys as she navigates to whatever is so important.
“The files on the phone were encrypted,” she tells me. “So Ronan asked Tamra to shoot them my way.”
“He did?” I glance at him, and he nods. I hadn’t even noticed him sending a text. “Stealthy,” I say. “So you got through Mr. Big’s security?”
“I did.” She taps some more. “And to be honest, it was very high-end security. Made me wonder why he needs his phone so well-protected.”
“And you found something,” I say.
She shoots me a sideways glance. “Yeah. I found something. You’re not going to like it.”
“What?”
A single brow rises, and she looks at me for a beat before turning her attention back to the computer. Ronan moves to stand behind me, his hand on my shoulder as we both look at her screen. So far, there’s nothing there. Then the screen pops on, and I realize I’m looking at my empty living room. Specifically, the sitting area with the couch by which we found the body.
“I don’t understand,” I say. “Who took that video?” The angle is from above, as if we’re floating near the ceiling looking down.
“It’s the security feed,” Reggie says. “Streamed straight to his phone in real time.”
“Security feed? But the house doesn’t have any security cameras on the inside.”
“Oh, yeah. It really does.” She turns to give Ronan a wry glance. “You should probably tell Devlin there’s some interesting footage of him and Ellie from when they stayed over back when all that mess was going on.”
I reach a hand up and start rubbing my temple. “Are you serious? Everywhere?” I feel nauseous. Somebody’s been watching me. Constantly watching me.
I press my hand to my mouth, afraid I just might throw up.
“You okay?”
“Not really,” I admit, turning to face him. “How could he—why? Why would he do that?”
