“I almost—” He shook his head, cutting off the words.

“What?”

He started to tell her never mind, but he also knew her well enough to know she’d never let it go. “I almost came onto her last night.” God knew he’d wanted to.

Cami leaned back, her arms crossed as she studied his face. “Really? Well, she’s sharp and doesn’t take shit and she’s easy on the eyes. On that alone, she ticks your boxes. Gonna go for it?”

“Don’t even play that game with me. She’s Sabrina’s sister. We’re working together. Not just any old work. We’re trying to figure out who killed Sabrina. Her twin sister. The woman I loved more than life itself. But from her perspective, I’m at the top of the suspect list”

Cami took a long sip of coffee. “Well, it’s obvious what’s going on.”

“What?”

She faced him straight on, her expression totally deadpan. “It’s been ages since you’ve been properly laid.”

“Fifteen years,” he said.

She rolled her eyes and flipped him the bird. The last time they’d slept together had been eleven years ago.

“You walked right into that,” he said.

“I do love you. I just don’t love you. Sometimes I wish I did.”

“Me, too,” he admitted. “I don’t know if I’ll ever love anyone again.”

“Brax.” Her voice was gentler than he’d heard from her in years. “Don’t think like that.”

He shook his head. “No, I’m alright. I’m not feeling sorry for myself. I just—It’s just that she was everything. But I’m luckier than most people. We crammed a lifetime into six years.”

“You deserve more.”

“I don’t disagree. But, alas, I never learned how to turn back time.”

“And yet Sam is right here.”

“She’s not a substitute for Sabrina.”

Cami put her hand on top of his. “I know that. But maybe she’s solace. A way to smooth those rough edges. Hell, maybe it will grow into more.”

“In case you forgot, she thinks I killed her sister.”

“Maybe she did. Now that she’s hung out with you, she’s probably having doubts. Especially since she’s attracted to you, too.”

“Bullshit.”

Cami laughed. “I saw the way she looked at me when she realized I was wearing your shirt. Before she got the coffee explanation. It’s a wonder she didn’t pierce one of my organs with all the daggers she was shooting at me. She may not trust you, but she’s attracted to you.” She shrugged. “And, not to sound mercenary, but you don’t know her full story. It might not be a bad idea to reel her in a little.”

“What the hell, Cam?”

“Oh, please. Don’t you’re act all shocked. You know as well as I do that she’s less of a threat if you fuck her. Unless she’s a stone-cold bitch, she’ll have some attachment.”

He patted her knee. “Got news for you, babe: you’re the stone cold bitch.”

Her smile was pure sugar. “Why thank you darling. I always knew you saw the real me.”

He couldn’t help it. He burst out laughing.

She glanced at her watch. “We need to go.”
