"Then the investigation will be extremely thorough."

Their laughter dissolved into another kiss. Kaiven eased her down with her injured leg supported along the cushions, then knelt between her thighs. The humor in his eyes darkened into hunger as he looked at her. Maelis felt exposed and wanted, but not assessed. Not cataloged. Not owned. After everything the Sargans had done to people that day, the distinction mattered enough to make her eyes sting.

Kaiven touched her inner thigh and waited only long enough for her to open to him. His fingers found her already wet. Maelis gasped and arched when he stroked her, first slowly and then with the sure attention of a man learning from every sound she made. She had spent most of the day controlling routes, names, numbers, and people who needed certainty from her. Under his hands she finally let control become unnecessary.

"Kaiven." His name came out breathless when he lowered his mouth to her. The first sweep of his tongue over her sent a hard shiver through her entire body. He held her hips without pinning them, giving her something to push against as pleasure built. She twisted one hand into his hair and stopped caring whether anyone outside the door could hear the broken sounds escaping her.

He brought her close, eased away just enough to make her swear at him, then returned with a deliberate stroke that tipped her over. The climax hit hard and fast, tightening every muscle from her belly to her toes. Kaiven stayed with her through it, mouth and fingers gentling only when her body began to soften beneath him.

When he rose over her again, Maelis caught his face between her hands. His pupils had widened until the violet of his eyes was nearly swallowed by black. The solmatu awareness between them had become a low current beneath her skin, stronger than before but still unfinished. She could feel him there without losing the edges of herself.

"Inside me," she said.

Kaiven closed his eyes for one brief second. "No shield."

"No shield," she repeated. "Come here."

He entered her slowly, and the first deep stretch of him made her breath catch. Kaiven stopped immediately, forehead pressed against hers, his whole body shaking with the effort of holding still. Maelis wrapped her good leg around his hip and drew him deeper. "I am not asking you to stop."

Something changed in his face. The last of the officer disappeared. He kissed her, hard enough now to feel like hunger, and began to move. At first his strokes were measured because of her knee and because they were still learning the shape of each other. Then Maelis found the angle she wanted and met him, guiding him with her body until caution became rhythm rather than restraint.

The bond opened wider with every thrust. She felt his love not as words but as warmth and pressure, the unmistakable emotional presence of him carried beneath the physical pleasure. His fear was there too, but it no longer tried to control the moment. Maelis let him feel her answer: desire, trust, exhaustion, grief for the world outside the door, and the fierce joy of having something to choose in the middle of everything that had been taken from them.

"Maelis." Her name broke from him when she tightened around him. His control was almost gone now. She wanted it gone.

She slid her hands down his back and pulled him closer. "I chose you, Kaiven. Stop holding back from what I already chose."

He answered with a deeper thrust that stole the rest of her breath. Pleasure climbed again, slower this time but stronger, every movement driving it higher. The couch creaked beneath them. Emergency announcements murmured beyond the wall. None of it mattered. Kaiven's mouth found hers as their bodies moved together, and Maelis felt the strange perfection of being completely present in a world that had spent the day trying to tear everything apart.

Her second climax began as a tightening low in her belly and then broke through her in waves. She cried out against his mouth, clinging to him as her body pulsed around him. Kaiven groaned her name and drove deep once more. She felt the instant he stopped fighting his own release.

He came inside her, and the physical sensation was only the beginning. Warmth spread through her, then something deeper caught and locked into place—not a chain, not a claim, but a connection completing with startling certainty. The unfinished current between them surged once, bright enough that Maelis gasped, and then settled into something steady. Kaiven was there. Entirely himself. Separate from her. Connected to her in a way that had not existed one heartbeat before.

His whole body went rigid above her as he felt it too. Then he folded down carefully, holding his weight off her injured leg while his face disappeared against her neck. For several seconds neither of them spoke. Maelis could feel his heart hammering against her chest and the new bond carrying a stunned, almost disbelieving tenderness between them.

"That," she whispered when language finally returned, "was significantly better than the poetry."

Kaiven laughed into her skin, breathless and wrecked. "You have not read the good poetry."

"If it is better than that, I may reconsider my position."

He lifted his head. His eyes were still dark with pleasure, but the expression in them had gone soft. "How do you feel?"

Maelis took a moment before answering, not because she was uncertain but because she wanted to name it accurately. The bond was intimate, startling, and permanent. It did not blur her thoughts or make his needs indistinguishable from her own. She was still Maelis Torren. He was still Kaiven Daratu. The connection simply made the distance between those two truths smaller.

"Like myself," she said. "With you very close by."

Relief moved through the bond so clearly that she smiled. "You were afraid I would feel claimed."

"I was afraid I would give you any reason to."

She brushed damp hair back from his forehead. "Recognition found us. It did not make this choice for me." Her fingertips traced his cheek. "You did not make it for me either. Remember that when you are tempted to become unbearable again."

"I will be unbearable in new and respectful ways."

"That sounds more realistic."

He kissed her, slower now, and held her while their breathing settled. When they finally shifted apart, Kaiven found a blanket in the storage cabinet and tucked it around both of them with the solemn concentration of a man conducting another military operation. Maelis let him fuss because some forms of care were worth accepting, and because she could feel the quiet happiness behind it now without mistaking it for authority.
