Chapter One

Brody

Lisette Grenier scrutinized the playback as we all held our collective breaths. She clapped her hands. “Bravo. You may go.”

All the cast and crew of Vigilante Justice exhaled. Having the director say she was happy and that we were free to go, was relieving.

Wait.

Had she said she was happy? Bravo meant that, right? And we were shooting the scene for the twelfth time, so that meant something.

Cole Hamilton slapped me on the back.

As he was the star of VJ, and a very busy man, I hadn’t expected him to pay me any attention. Which was kind of silly because Cole paid notice to everyone on the cast and crew. No one was beneath his notice.

“I have to get home to Caressa and Michael.” He had a super goofy look on his face as he mentioned his triad partners. “The cast and some of the crew are going out to Jumpin’ Jacks.” Most of the stars of the show were left in peace at this local low-key hangout. Of course, having a pile of crew protecting them tended to help.

“Wish Caressa and Michael a lovely New Year’s.”

He grinned. “They’re very forgiving of me working.”

“On New Year’s Eve Day? I can believe that.” His partners were two of the kindest people I’d ever met. And they adored Cole—which made them extra special. “Sorry you won’t be there.” I eyed some of the takedown that remained to be done on the set. As the show’s key grip, supervising that would be my job. I checked my watch. “It’s still pretty early.” Like barely three.

“I think a few people plan to go home and relax first. Seamus said something about ringing in the New Year at the bar?”

“Oh, really.” Seamus, and his husband Val, were always the first to leave, what with their foster son to get home to.

“Yeah. Kelci and Elouise are babysitting tonight. Practice, as they like to say.”

Practice because actress Elouise was pregnant, so she and her makeup artist wife Kelci were over the moon, expecting their first child in the new year.

“That’s sweet.” Elouise hadn’t been required for shooting today. In fact, the production had shifted to shoot most of her scenes last month as she was showing. Camera angles could only do so much, and Elouise’s character, Mirela, was definitely not pregnant.

“So Seamus and Val. Oh, Dade and his husband Horatio will be there. And I think Julie Reyes is going.” Julie played opposite Cole’s lead, while Dade had a great supporting role on the show. His older, somewhat stodgier husband, Horatio, was a hoot.

At that moment, Donovan Riggs, our stunt coordinator, made his way over. He clapped Cole on the back. “Dude, Caressa’s about to pop—”

The color drained from Cole’s face. “She’s not due for another month. She said she was fine—”
