Again, I’m left speechless and dumbfounded with no time to correct this child of all her wrong assumptions. Adam opens his door, pushing me against it as his lips part to meet mine. He doesn’t dare speak a word about what his niece threw into the universe. I moan, falling under his spell as his lips, hands, and cock work their magic for the rest of the night.

Chapter 23

Lauren

Adam has spent the last three days in Aspen. This past week gave me a glimpse of what things would have been like had I not met Adam the night of the interview, or the first few days moving to the city. This week has flown by with my extra shifts and meetings with charity donors. I think back to how I would have never seen Adam again, if not for him interrupting my burger. The hotel lounge was my last attempt in hopes that Max would show interest in me or someone worthy of my arrangement would come along. I’m thankful for Adam and his mindset.

If Adam hadn’t been my crutch that night when I fainted at the gym after that newborn lost her fight on the streets, would I have been this strong and able to push through the other events he’s helped me with? Would I cope with being swapped at work and still be able to get my side charity off the ground? Would therapy have even been on my mind? I shake my head, pushing back the what-ifs. It amazes me how far I’ve come with my own emotions and coping skills. I’m now able to start to embrace the feeling of being wanted.

Of being enough.

I’ve started to believe that when someone says they care, they do.

Because Adam’s showed me. Time and time again.

“Enjoy your entire week off, Ren!” Tessa waves, pulling me out of thought. “Tell Adam he better make it worth it.”

“See you next week, Tessa!” I call down the hall and pick up my workbag to head to Adam’s.

The blender sounds through the penthouse as I enter. Adam stands in the kitchen, shirtless in a pair of basketball shorts. His hair is damp and his skin is glistening off the candlelight.

Wait, candlelight?

His fresh shower gel is extremely alluring and possesses my body to go kiss every inch of him. He glances my way as I watch his eyes light up with my arrival. A soft smile plays on his lips. My abs tighten as I internally rage at any past woman who has ever done him wrong. He cares deeply about people and most importantly, the light in his smile is how much he cares about me.

Because I’ve let him.

Realization smacks my consciousness, knowing I’ve lived in such darkness by my own doing. It’s now that I don’t want to think of myself in the arms of anyone but him. It’s now that I want to be the only person he cherishes this way.

When I look at him, I see the sun burning through the mist, eliminating every ounce of fog clouding my vision.

He’s every flicker in each flame surrounding us. The defibrillator bringing me to life with every beat of my wounded heart.

He’s my wants I never knew I could attain.

Sensing my wandering mind settling, Adam walks over and wraps his arms around my waist. I lift my arms around his neck, pulling myself flush against him. His lips press to mine gently but emanate a groan of hunger. I part my mouth, deepening the kiss, feeling his need grow against my stomach. I slide my hands down his chest, resting them on his hips as I pull back with a playful smile.

“Hi.” I look up into his eyes. “It’s been a long three days.”

“Hi.” He pecks my lips and tightens his grip on my ass. “These fitted scrubs put filthy thoughts into my mind.”

“Yeah?” I raise a brow. “Did you miss your naughty nurse while you were in Aspen?”

“I think you’ll have to prescribe me something for wrist support.” The thought of him getting off swirls even more pleasure between my legs.

“Hmm, I’ll take good care of you tonight.” My stomach grumbles and he drops his arms.

“Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes.” Adam heads to the stove, watching me poke out my bottom lip in a pout. “You need food before I put you in all the positions I’ve mentally put you in while holding my cock.”

“I guess I’ll have a quick shower. I love the mood lighting too, by the way.” I walk toward his bathroom and strip off my clothes, turning back with a wink as his eyes stay glued to my body.

I never thought I’d feel comfortable using another man’s shower without him in it. There’s something domestic about the comfort I feel coming back to Adam’s place after work and dinner is made for us. We now share intimate moments beyond an orgasm fix. I swallow my silent fear as tears prick my eyes. Maybe one day, the desire for each other will fade and we will end up a boring couple who go through the motions. The moment we are still together but become nothing more than roommates. Or worse, one of us no longer wants to continue this while it’s going great.

I turn the water to cold before stepping out and changing into my thin tank top and his tight boxers.

“Hey, where’s your mind?” Adam finishes his last bite breaking through our silent dinner.

I look down at my half-eaten chicken rigatoni.
