It took only a few swipes of Valeria’s tongue before she completely fell apart. She would have been embarrassed at how little effort that took if it wasn’t for Valeria’s pleased rumble as she nursed her through her climax, Caroline gently pushing her away when the sensation became too much for her to bear.

“Somehow you’re even better than I’ve always dreamed,” Valeria said quietly as she undid the buttons of Caroline’s dress.

“Sometimes, I think all of this is a dream, and I’m just about to wake up.”

“I promise this isn’t a dream.”

This time when they kissed, it was gentle, but when Valeria broke away, she ducked her head. Her breath was ragged, and her eyes were screwed shut.

“Are you all right?”

“I’ll be fine,” Valeria said, her voice strained. “I don’t feel well, but it will pass.”

She ran a hand over Valeria’s forehead, and her skin felt cool. She frowned. She wasn’t clammy at all, but her skin was noticeably cooler. Valeria ducked away from Caroline’s touch.

“I’ll be all right; I’m just cold.”

“Are you sure? You actually seem sick right now.”

“You mean unlike those previous times when I pretended to be sick?” She said with a smirk.

“Exactly.”

“I’m fine, I promise. I only lost myself for a moment and got a bit dizzy, but I’m feeling fine now.”

Caroline wasn’t quite sure if she was telling the truth, but she couldn’t find fault with what Valeria said, so she gave a sharp nod, satisfied for the moment as her eyes grew heavy and she fell into a deep sleep.

CHAPTER 18

Abreathy moan sounded as she felt a deep pull from within. Her senses were dulled, but she felt as if something was being taken from her.

“Millie, stop playing with your food,” a sharp male voice scolded.

Her head turned to see the speaker, who was facing a blonde woman with only his profile visible to her. He was a tall, pale man with a thin build. Not quite as willowy as Dr. Gardner, but just as tall. Wavy, dark brown hair reached his collar, and a single curl fell over his profile. He looked to be a Greek God carved in marble and was the most beautiful man she had ever seen.

But her body screamed that he was the greatest danger she had ever seen; fear flooded her, and she heard a choking sound as the man’s face snapped to hers. His dark eyes flashed like a candle’s reflection in a mirror as his gaze narrowed at her.

“Fascinating, I didn’t think our little solicitor had any tricks.”

Caroline’s eyes flew open, heart racing as her hands shook. She felt for Valeria in the bed; she needed a hug, or human contact, or anything to assure her she was fine. That man couldn’t get to her, as he was just a figure trapped in her dream.

She didn’t dare close her eyes again in case he was there.

Her bed was empty, which wasn’t surprising since sunlight filtered into her room and she had told Valeria they shouldn’t sleep together, but she was disappointed all the same.

“Ah, you’re finally up,” Lucy said, seated in an armchair across the room. One of Caroline’s blouses was on her lap as she mended the worn sleeve.

“What time is it?”

“Nearly noon.”

Caroline shot up. “Why did you let me sleep for so long?”

Lucy shrugged. “I tried waking you up earlier, but you wouldn’t stir. I thought you must have needed the sleep if you weren’t waking up on your own.”

“Still, you know I don’t like to sleep late.”

“I thought you might be coming down with some illness and it’s best to sleep that off.”
