The mood between us is slightly tense, and neither of us says anything.

The interruption really did mess things up. I’m not sure why. Maybe I should just say something, clear the air, but I’m nervous again. Wes’s mood is different, and I don’t want to assume things are moving for real between us if that’s not where he is too.

It sure seemed like it was.

But I’ve been wrong before.

After about thirty minutes, I’m so uptight and uncomfortable I’m about to blurt something out despite my worry. But I get a text from Natalie just then.

OMG! Look! It’s gone viral again!

She’s linked a video clip of us kissing against the car.

We really do look hot and heavy. Not like we’re faking at all.

“They’re posting us again?” Wes asks, glancing over from the driver’s side.

“Yeah. It’s gotten a lot of traction really quickly. Maybe we can get another wave of interest and extend this a little longer.”

Wes is silent. Very silent.

I’ve been watching the film clip on repeat, but now I turn to check his face. “Unless you don’t want to.”

“No. It’s silly not to make use of it if people get interested again.” He sounds almost tired, and I don’t know why.

“If you don’t want to, we’re not going to do this. It’s really fine.”

“I just said I did want to.”

“But it didn’t sound like you meant it.”

“I do mean it. Why are you questioning me about it?” He’s getting annoyed.

So am I. “Because your mood is off. I thought… I thought things were good.” I’m almost embarrassed to admit it.

“They are good. This is good. This is what we wanted, right? We can get more business for Blossom Park. That’s the most important thing.”

“It is.”

Of course it is.

Blossom Park has always been my priority.

Wes probably just feels weird and awkward about the kiss and then the exposure that followed.

So do I.

I’ll let it go for now.

Things will be better tomorrow.

CHAPTER 12

Wes turns on music—the soundtrack of the musical we just saw—so we’re saved from having to talk for the remainder of the trip home.

It’s not until we’re pulling in through the front gate of Blossom Park that Wes silences the music.

I’ve been trying to talk myself into composure, but I lose it again as he drives through the familiar grounds and then through the privacy gate to the cottages.
