"You need to be careful."

I let out a humorless laugh.

"I think that became impossible weeks ago."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

His expression hardens.

"What happened with Gnash wasn't just another diplomatic incident."

"I know."

"Markets are reacting."

"I know."

"Military traffic is increasing."

That gets my attention.

I straighten.

"How much?"

"We're still sorting through reports."

"Bellamy."

He sighs.

"Enough that people are noticing."

A chill settles in my stomach. Not fear exactly—more the warning that comes before fear.

"I'll keep digging," I say.

"You always do."

His image flickers.

"Ursa?"

"Yeah?"

His gaze holds mine.

"Don't become part of the story."

The connection cuts before I can answer.

For a moment I stare at my reflection in the dark screen. Then I start walking again.

If fleets are mobilizing, someone already knows more than the public does.

I intend to find out who.
