"Mm." She watched the range. "The case registered an event at eleven minutes to two. Brief. Bright, if brightness is the word for what the case measures, which it is not, quite." She turned from the window and gave me the mild gray attention that is the whole of her face when she is working. "Neave assures me storms produce artifacts in the record. Pressure. Static in the old wiring. A gas mantle misbehaving on the east walk would do it, I am told."

"The east walk mantles are original plant," I said. "They misbehave in any weather. I will have Croft look at the governors."

"Do," she said, and resumed walking, and spent the rest of the gallery on the chapel roof fund, and I walked beside her at the correct distance producing correct sentences about lead, while behind my sternum, in the room where I do my true accounting, one entry wrote itself in capitals: the case saw the lamp. The case saw the lamp, she has held the reading for three weeks, and she spent it on me today, casually, at a turning, watching my face when the figure landed. Eleven minutes to two. Off by two minutes, unless I am, and I may be. I do not know what my face paid out. I have a face I trust in committee. I do not know what it does at a range of three feet from a woman who tears her paper against a rule kept in one room.

That night I took out the form I had not filed, and looked at it, and did not file it, and understood that I had stopped being a man deliberating and become a man delaying, and that these are different trades with different tools, and that the second one always believes it is still the first.

There was one honest way out of the delay, and it was certainty. Doctrine does not ask for certainty, doctrine asks for suspicion and asks it within a day; but doctrine was written by men who never had to do this twice-weekly arithmetic under a live mandate, and I told myself a station under inspection could not afford a false report in either direction, and that I would therefore establish the fact before disposing of it. I record the reasoning as I performed it. I knew at the time it was scaffolding. A man who intends to jump does not survey the bridge.

The fourth Tuesday, I had Rosalind bring tea instead of water. The weather covered it; the term had turned cold in the night, the way this valley turns, all at once, like a decision.

There is an assessment the office teaches its officers for use in the field, in rooms where nothing may be seen to occur. It requires a struck note and a resonant body: the office's ring, which I have worn on the right little finger since I was twenty-four, and any vessel that rings true. Bone china rings true. The method is disgracefully simple, as all the old field methods are: you strike the note in the subject's presence while his attention is elsewhere, and you count the decay. A struck cup has a half-life. It is as fixed as anything in nature. What shortens it is dampness, a finger, a crack. Nothing lengthens it.

Nothing is supposed to lengthen it.

He was mid-flight on the fourth agenda item, integration, which he treats as a standing joke between us ("I'm integrating; I had lunch with the economist; he explained bonds to me; I nearly integrated into the river"), and his hands were going, and his attention was fully spent on making the flat man behind the desk break, which is his hobby now, I have watched him decide it, and under the cover of reaching for the pot I let the ring touch the rim of my cup. Once. A tap the width of a hair.

The note stood up into the room, small and clean, and did not die.

Three seconds. Five. The sound sat between us on the desk like a guest neither of us had introduced. Eight. He glanced at the cup, because he glances at everything, catalogued it as old china doing what old china does, and went on building the case for the economist's dullness, and at eleven seconds, eleven, I put my finger on the rim and killed the note, and poured, and my hand poured level, because it is a trained hand and knows its work, and inside me the accounting room had gone entirely silent.

A cup that rings past its half-life is answering something. It answers what is in the room. Twenty-six years, and I have heard a cup do that twice: once in this country, once abroad, and both times the man across the table had come to us found, filed, schooled from boyhood, carried in a folder of the color Rosalind calls mustard and never asks about, handled at every stage by people who knew precisely what they were handling. Category is the wrong word and I will use it anyway, since the right one goes unwritten: it is a category I have met twice in a working lifetime, and both times the college in question had rearranged itself around the fact the way a riverbed rearranges around a dropped bell, and neither of those men had ever in their lives walked unregistered across an open quad, laughing, on his way to teach undergraduates.

I made the tea last. At ten minutes to five, while he was writing down the one syllabus concession I had granted so that he could dispute it next week, I did it again — the ring, the rim, a hair's tap, nearer his side of the desk this time, where the pot stood.

Eleven seconds. His side of the desk rang longer.

He left at five with the agenda item unresolved by design, his and mine both, since an unresolved item is a guaranteed Tuesday, and neither of us has said so, and both of us schedule by it. At the door he stopped, and I braced along lines I have given up mapping, and he said, "The china's singing today, by the way. You should have somebody look at that," and was gone down the corridor at his usual speed, which is the speed of a man arriving everywhere slightly ahead of his own caution.

I sat down and did not move for some time.

Here is the deliberation, set down the way it occurred, which is to say as a list, numbered, itemized. I am aware of whose instrument the numbered list is. I have read pages of his notebook in my mind's eye for weeks without ever having seen one. The irony is noted, filed, and not funny.

Reasons to report, in the form doctrine requires, immediately, to the inspector resident under my own roof:

One. The station. If concealment is discovered, the station does not receive a sanction; the station receives a finding, and the finding closes it, and closure is not a locked door. Closure is the college made tidy: every mind that brushed the hidden layer wiped along that edge, staff, students, the innocent with the rest, nine years of my rationing ended in one general audit. Hundreds of people who have never heard the word station would pay for my silence with pieces of themselves they would never learn to miss.

Two. The mandate. She is not here generally; she is here about the spring incident involving Micah Vane, about irregularity as such, and there is no irregularity in the station's books, in any station's books, larger than the one that rang my teacup twice this afternoon.

Three. Doctrine, which I have kept for twenty-six years, not from obedience but because I have seen the alternative: the field methods of the last century, the found-too-late cases, the crater where a Welsh chapel stood. The rules are written in other people's blood, and an officer who exempts himself has decided his own judgment outbids the blood, and I have buried two officers who decided that.

Four. His safety. This is the argument doctrine would lead with, and it is not nothing: a man of that category, unfound, unschooled, is a boiler with a painted-over gauge. Registration would surround him with people who know what he is and how he must be handled.

I wrote the fourth reason out in full, and then I sat with it, because I have seen how he would be handled. I was shown at twenty-four, the day they opened the case, the day I signed. Registration is a mustard folder. It is a schedule of sittings, kindly conducted. It is the schooling of a grown man into gratitude toward people whose names run off him like rain off glass, and at the end of the process there is a version of him still walking, still employed, still pleasant, whose seminar runs at a reasonable volume, who mislays nothing because there is nothing left in him that wants finding, who has no first question, let alone a second, and who would pass the east range and see stone. They would not hurt him. That is the terrible center of it. They would help him, at the standard rate, until what makes him him had been assessed, metered, and drawn down in accordance with the tables.

Reasons not to report.

One.

I looked at the single entry for a long time. I am a man of lists myself, whatever I pretend; mine are merely printed, countersigned, and filed, and I have learned to distrust any column of mine with one entry in it, because a one-entry column is not accounting, it is confession. I could dress it in operational language, and nearly did: retain the asset unregistered pending study; protect the station's cleanest term in a decade from a finding it cannot survive; do not hand a starving office the richest thing it has seen in sixty years. All of those sentences are true and all of them are the coat, not the man. The entry under them has eleven letters and I counted them, the way I count everything, and I am not writing them down, because ink is discoverable, and because some sentences, once written, are true in every room afterward, and I have one room left where nothing is true yet, and I am keeping it.

I chose item one.

Let it be plain, on this page no one reads. Not the station, which I have served for twenty-six years. Not the college, which I would have said, until October, was the whole of me. Not doctrine, other people's blood and all. A man rang true in my office at four o'clock, twice, and I weighed the safety of every soul on this ground against the one entry, and I chose the entry, and then I dressed for dinner, because the campus community was at dinner in hall and knew nothing, and I intended to keep both conditions.
