A sigh of relief slipped past his lips when Truth came face to face with the shadowed figure. It was a woman, dark hair, dark eyes, a black hoodie pulled up over her head.

It wasn’t Pandora.

As he met her gaze full of shadows, his fear faded away. Chills no longer raced down his spine, the sweat cooled where it’d beaded on his temples and the back of his neck, and he finally relaxed his jaw.

“What happened?” he asked Youth, keeping one eye on the demon he suspected was—

“This is Fear,” he said, running a hand through his hair nervously. “We can trust her.”

She was the other demon who’d been with Youth, standing out on the back lawn when he’d texted for them to turn their backs to the house. Truth stared at the younger demon and sensed he was telling the truth. But just because he believed they could trust Fear, didn’t mean they actually could.

“I heard what Pandora did to Betrayal,” she announced, voice as cold as her affliction.

Truth simply arched a brow at her.

“She tried to have him killed.”

“Okay?” he drawled, anger coloring his tone. “But working with her to lock us up is so much different?”

“It is, and you know it.” Their gazes locked for a long moment as Truth tried to read her.

“Are you working for Pandora?”

“Yes, in a way.” Fear didn’t flinch as she delivered her answer and it was accompanied by a familiar warm breeze.

“Are you loyal to Pandora?”

“No,” she scoffed.

“Do you plan to act in her favor?”

“Not anymore.”

Youth stood to the side, his gaze flickering back and forth like a dog watching a ball pass between hands.

“Why were you working with her in the first place?”

“I have my reasons,” she practically growled, and wiped all trace of emotion from her features.

“How’d you know I wasn’t still loyal to Pandora?” Youth inquired suddenly, turning to her.

Her gaze was empty. Was that because she was Fear or because of her history with Pandora?

“You’re scared of Pandora, afraid of what would happen if she found out. I could sense it,” she explained.

“So you sensed it and then what? Decided to tag along?” Truth asked accusingly, heart rate rising. This situation was getting out of control.

“I don’t have to explain myself to you,” she sneered, and crossed her arms.

Truth groaned. “You’re like teenagers. Fuck.” Turning his glare on Youth, he pointed a finger at the younger demon. “You’re an idiot. Why did you throw your phone away? Why did you lie to Death? You could have just told the truth!”

“I didn’t want to out you before you were ready! I knew you were freaking out about telling Daria.”

“Well, thanks for taking me into such great consideration!” Truth scoffed. “Now we both just look more guilty.”

“Guilty of what, exactly?” a soft voice asked from behind him.

A soft, familiar voice laced with barely hidden pain.
