He said it with a tone that just said he knew something, and Wendy’s curiosity piqued.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean how Tate and Arlo were absolutely fucking last night when I came down.”

Wendy’s cheeks colored even while heat speared her belly. “Oh yeah?”

Why did her voice sound like that?

Nic’s grin was all too knowing. “Can I show you something?”

Now would be a good time to talk to him.

Big fat chicken. That was her middle name. “Can I have coffee first?”

Nic stepped to the side, revealing a cup already doctored for her taste. “Bring it with.”

Ugh, Nic. Why’d you have to be so thoughtful?

“Okay, okay, lead the way.”

Nic led her back upstairs, and with every step that creaked under her feet, the nerves in her belly fluttered more—less like butterfly wings and more like bats.

“I just wanted to talk to you about some stuff,” Nic began as he pushed open the bedroom door. The room was flooded with their scents. It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened in here last night.

Wendy tried not to let her stomach flop at his words. “G-Good. I wanted to talk to you about something too,” she shared.

Nic arched a brow at her. “What’s up?”

Oh. I guess I’ll go first then.

She hadn’t even had time to rehearse what she was going to say.

“It’s about what we talked about last night,” she stalled.

Nic pulled her over to the bed and sat down.

The omega in her wanted to cuddle up to him and sit in his lap and—

They’d never get any talking done that way.

With a sigh, she slid to a spot against the wall, pulling the pillows around her like soldiers to protect her from the conversation. She didn’t realize she was basically nesting until she glanced up and caught Nic’s smile.

“Comfy?” he asked as she stilled. Color warmed her cheeks as she nodded.

“So which part of last night?”

“The part where we talked about the alphas. Specifically… Griffith.”

Confusion hazed over Nic’s gaze and he tilted his head to the side. “Alright, I’m listening.”

All she could do was remember how Grif’s scent had been all over Nic when he’d returned last night. “I know you have a past, and I’m not asking to know what kind of past. But whatever it is, both of you have unresolved feelings about it,” she said, confidence waning with every word.

Nic’s cheeks flushed, brows furrowed. “Nothing we would say to each other today could change what happened. It’s a closed book,” he declared softly, waving a hand through the air.

“I see the way you guys look at each other,” Wendy pushed.

There it is.
