Maeve was weak, staring up at his still wrinkled bed face and messy hair. Who was she to deny him?
Leaning up on her toes, she pressed her lips to Galen’s for a brief kiss.
He pouted, so she went back for another, sweeter one.
“Did you sleep better after your nightmare?” she asked as she pulled away. Maeve spun out of his arms and grabbed his plate to set on the bar.
“Huh—Oh. Yeah, like a baby,” he answered.
The small hesitation made her stomach twist, but she let it go.
For now.
“No, I can’t. I shouldn’t. Right?”
Maeve threw her hands up in the air and went for another lap around the kitchen island. Her laptop was sitting on the island counter, open to a search engine. The cursor was blinking at her, daring her to type in what she wanted to know, but she felt…
“This is so stupid,” she grumbled and whirled around. The train of puppies on her trail tripped over one another as they tried and failed to come to a clumsy stop.
“What do I do?” she asked them. Three innocent, clueless pairs of eyes stared up at her. Not glowing, she might add.
Maybe she’d imagined the eyes. Maybe she’d imagined it all.
No. Those shirts had been ripped in very specific, suspicious places that made her think of old werewolf movies from the 80s.
Why? How?
One of the pups barked at her, a tiny ruff that was so adorable it melted her heart. Maeve turned to stare at the computer, the blinking cursor.
Cuddling Galen back to sleep, feeling his arms around her, knowing that he needed her, was enough for her to want to give this whole thing up.
And it was that thought exactly that made her pull out her laptop as soon as Galen left the apartment. She couldn’t get swept up in… in her tall, dark, super sexy boyfriend that she was totally head over heels for.
She couldn’t keep brushing off all these weird things that kept happening. And with the ‘nightmare’ and the jacket that was maybe wet.
The puppies weren’t paying her any mind, playing around the apartment while Galen was running extremely late errands for his boss. How the fuck was the man out of town and still needed Galen to wait on him hand and foot?
This promotion better be fucking good. If not, she’d have to march her ass up there, find this cock nugget boss of Galen’s, and give him something to stress about.
Unless… what if he wasn’t running errands for his boss?
What if he was cheating on her?
Her gaze narrowed as the thought occurred to her and threatened to disrupt reality.
“There’s no way,” she said aloud. Galen would never cheat on her. He worshiped the ground she walked on, had from day fucking one.
Between the two options, it was likely he was a fucking werewolf or some shit.
“Ugh!” she groaned and trudged to the computer. If nothing else, she could put her suspicions to rest and move on.
Her stomach twisted itself in a knot as she typed in a phrase. It felt so silly that she was actually asking Google for… she winced—a list of supernatural creatures and their habits.
She blamed the month of October, when they’d binged all the lame, cheesy horror movies they could find. It put too many ideas in her head.
The hits she got were overwhelming, press release after press release since the Big Reveal, but she spent the next few hours lost in the internet, wading through and narrowing down the list.
“He doesn’t have an obsession with kissing my neck,” she announced to the puppies.
