Hayes emerges from the security room holding the jammer inside an evidence bag.

I stare at the empty doorway.

“Did we get it?”

“All of it.”

I touch my earpiece.

“Piper?”

For several seconds there is only static.

Then:

“We got him.”

Her voice breaks slightly on the last word.

Not dramatically.

Just enough that I hear what the last several weeks cost her too.

I close my eyes.

“We?”

“Yes, Calder.”

A pause.

“We.”

I don’t know what the word means beyond this operation.
