He mentioned something about juggling between life and death situations. Was it just his work or…is something else involved? I couldn’t quite place it but it was obvious something was bothering him.

My eyelids became increasingly difficult to keep open so I decided I’d worry about it later as I gave in to the sleep that swept over me by the reason of my exhaustion.

Oscar's POV:

She looked absolutely beautiful, half asleep, curled up in my arms as I carried her to the bed to continue the nap she began in the tub earlier. Before I met this pretty lady, I had no idea I loved caring for someone else this much. My exes– if I could call them that, noting that my relationships with them were never quite official in the actual sense of the word– labelled me a tad too controlling and possessive; so it definitely was a burst of fresh air to find someone who compliments me so perfectly.

Being with her lessened the intensity of the grief I felt at my parents’ demise and she spurred me to want to process my discharge from the Marine Corps as soon as possible. I want to be more active in the company’s management. Most of all, I want to spend more time with this little angel.

She was the pristine picture of tranquil innocence curled up in a feline position on the off-white sheets, the ends of her blonde ringlets wet from the bath water. She was the treasure I found in California at a colleague's brother’s wedding and I’m not letting her go. No matter what.

My phone chimed with a text message from Davies, the investigator I hired to crack my parents’ murder after the Homicide Department said they had reached a dead end and had no further leads.

I felt my eyes water as I read the text for the third time. Could this be true? I needed to go see for myself but I feared leaving her again. I let her sleep and eased her off my chest and hurried to step out.

I lingered at the door, debating whether or not to rouse her and tell her I had to go. I decided against leaving a note, thinking I could just call her later, explaining why I had to leave.

As I sped down the freeway to the Headquarters, where Davies asked to meet up, only one question was on my mind– will my parents finally get justice?

CHAPTER SEVEN

Oscar

Four hours passed by in an instant as the investigators briefed me about the hit-man they believed was behind the murder of my parents. He was being protective of the people that hired him. They were probably influential to have even thought of making a move on my parents.

He was quick to confess he had help from one of the longest-serving staff that worked in their home but was still refusing to share the name of the nut-jobs that hired his pathetic ass.

While I was grateful I now had something substantial to hold on to as the first step to getting justice, the wound in my heart from losing the only family I had, seemed to go deeper than it originally was, on hearing that the hit-man had been taken into custody.

I was so pained and hurt that I felt like screaming. Screaming till my lungs gave out. No one should ever have to feel like this. How do I go protect the Homeland only to return to the news of my parents being murdered in their own house?

The homicide detectives seemed like they had several cases they were working on at the same time and were pretty stretched thin. That, I understand. What I don’t understand is why a middle aged couple can not feel safe in their own homes anymore.

Isn’t that why I fight? To protect the country from external threats? Why should an internal threat even have access to my family, mercilessly tearing me away from the only fragment of family I had left?

Pain, rage mingled with joy that the case was finally this close to being solved were the emotions that I was feeling at the moment. I could barely keep a clear mind as I drove back to my apartment. My throat stung from suppressed tears and a glass of two of whisky should help me cope with that.

I was already at my white duplex at Tribeca when I realized my keys were with Vanessa.

Shit. And I hadn’t even called her to tell her I had to leave or anything of the sort. I had messed up, I knew she must have been mad to wake up and find me gone without even a note this time.

I decided to buy some Chinese takeout on my way back as a peace offering…and possibly get her a cute doll to go with it. I hightailed it to Queens, getting there in under twenty minutes, only to meet her apartment locked and the rooms dark. She wasn’t home and this was proving to be rather frustrating.

Do I go home? Do I wait for her to return?

After turning the thought over, a few times in my head, I decided to return home and possibly just sleep in my car. I didn’t have many options at the time.

Vanessa’s POV:

When I woke up to find the bed empty, my first thought was that he was in the kitchen l, whipping up something for me like he did the last time I was at his place with him. I giggled, slipping on my fuzzy grey slippers to go startle him in the kitchen or something.

Imagine my dismay when I looked all over the house but couldn’t find Oscar anywhere. I couldn’t find a note either. It was bad. It was worse than last time.

Okay, maybe he didn’t want to wake me and didn’t know where he could get paper and pen. He must have called or texted then. So I lazily checked my phone. The drowsiness left my eyes when I realized I did not have any missed call.

Nothing. No calls, no texts, no chats. Nothing. Just vanished without a trace. I couldn’t have been dreaming because even the sheets bore his distinct scent.

Have I been played for a fool? No, it couldn’t possibly be. I spotted his keys lying on my drawer and I instantly got worried.
