“I can’t complain,” she said as she took the muffins out of the tin and put them on a cooling rack. “I get to make my own hours, and the locals are friendly enough. Some more than others.” She turned to look at me, and I became painfully aware of the way her eyes shined in the light. “I suppose I should finally ask you what has been bothering me ever since Halloween.” My heart sank as I set down the muffin I had started to free from its wrapper.
“I suppose we should go ahead and discuss it,” I agreed as I looked back up at her. “What is it you want to know?” Rebecca sat down in the chair next to me, a look of curiosity in her eyes.
“Is what Denise declared that night true?” she asked as she stared me down. When I realized there was no denying it, I finally nodded. Immediately, she looked down at the table. “Then why haven’t you said anything up until this point? Did I do something to make you decide not to do anything about it?” I stared at her in shock and disbelief.
That’s why she had been acting so strange all this time. She had been trying to cope with feeling responsible for my lack of response towards her. I had always thought that it would be better to stay away from her so she could make a life for herself. Now that I had seen she was hurting because of this, I felt even worse than before.
“I was giving you a chance to decide for yourself,” I admitted. “I didn’t know if you reciprocated my feelings or not, and the last thing I wanted was to take away the chance to live your life by giving you what felt like only a single choice.” She looked confused as she stared at me.
“Do you mean it?” she asked, and I nodded.
“Of course,” I reassured her. “Nothing would make me happier than to call you mine, but it’s not fair to thrust the world that you grew up in on you a second time. You could be free to leave the group and choose for yourself whether or not you associate with us.” Rebecca considered this for a moment before looking at me.
“Well, what if I did want that for myself?” she asked, her voice low and aroused as she offered me her hand. “Let's say I wanted to stay because I loved someone here. What choice would I be given then?” I reached over and took her hand into my own.
“If it were up to me,” I said as I pulled her closer to me, “you would be allowed to have the best of both worlds. After the move is complete, nothing will get in our way.” She smiled as she nodded in agreement.
“That is a chance I would love to take,” she reassured me. “I don’t want you hiding from me any longer, though. If I say yes and agree to be yours, I want everything.” I smiled and licked my lips hungrily as I nodded in agreement.
"Very well," I agreed as I held her tiny hand. "Not yet, though. Right now, we have too much work to do. However, remember that you belong to me now. No running around with anyone else. Am I clear?" Without hesitation, she placed my hand on her breast, showing me her dedication to her decision.
"Perfectly," she breathed, and I squeezed her breast in response.
CHAPTER SEVEN
Rebecca
Russel proved to be a better Daddy than I had thought. I knew a lot of men on the compound preferred younger women, but after I agreed to be Russel's "old lady" and Little, things took a turn for the better. No longer was I going about my daily life as if I was just going through the motions. This time, my life had meaning.
No one on the compound seemed to notice the change, and it made it easier to sneak around and see him when we had some free time. I felt like a teenager all over again, and it felt good to have someone looking out for me.
"You seem to be in an extra cheerful mood today," Sarah said as she wiped down the counters of the new bakery we operated together. Since Adam was so busy at the shop, Sarah had finally decided to join me in the bakery, so she didn't have to stay back at the compound and go crazy from boredom. I smiled as I looked over at her.
"No more than normal," I promised. "You've got a much healthier glow than you did this morning. Any special reason?" She beamed as she shook her head.
"Just glad to be out of the house," she told me. "I thought I was going to clean the house inside and out before the boredom ended." I nodded in agreement.
"I know the feeling," I reassured her. "That's how it felt throughout the entire week before we got the bakery opened. I can't imagine how it felt for you to be stuck with practically nothing for months at a time, which is why I'm sure you're glad that you got cleared to help me out." She giggled as she finished wiping down the counters.
"This is low stress work," she agreed as she set to work cleaning the coffee machines. "Everyone seems nice enough, and the most I have to worry about is making the items in the back if it gets too crazy. Honestly, I might hang up my trousers from the shop and take up an apron here after the baby is born." I frowned as I looked at her.
"What about the baby?" I asked. "What are you going to do for child care?" She nodded.
"We'll eventually send the baby to daycare," she informed me. "For the time being, I'll stay with the baby or come visit." Thinking this over, I came up with an idea.
"What will Lydia be doing?" I asked, and she thought for a moment.
"Honestly, I don't know," she told me. "We haven't gotten to talk ever since all this went down."
It made perfect sense. Ever since the group broke down to move, people who often spent time together didn't have the luxury of each other's company any longer. In fact, this was one of the first real conversations Sarah and I have had since before the move. Everything was an absolute disaster.
“So, what’s going on between you and Russel?” Sarah asked as we finished cleaning the lobby of the bakery while snow fell in the world beyond the thick panels of glass that served as the windows. When she saw me go pale in response, she laughed. “Come on. There’s no way anyone could be any less obvious. You two have something going on. What is it?” Realizing that there was no hiding it from someone who already had the product of her love growing inside her, I caved.
"Russel finally asked me to be his girlfriend," I admitted. Immediately, her jaw dropped in surprise as she smiled at me.
"What do you mean finally?" she asked, feeling a bit confused. "Are you referring to something happening before the Halloween party?" Deciding that there was no way around it, I nodded in agreement.
"We've been friends ever since my father's funeral," I informed her. "I guess that, because of Chase being a bit overprotective, it's been difficult to get our feelings out in the open. However, when Chase was going to allow me to leave the group and make a life for myself, Russel finally admitted his feelings towards me and asked me out." She smiled and nodded.
