"Oh good," he breathed as he smiled. "I was afraid you might not like it all."
CHAPTER EIGHT
Connor
Even though I knew that the fact that she seemed to like the gift wasn't full confirmation that she was a Little, it was a huge relief to know that she still liked it. In my personal experience, the best way to test to see if someone was a Little was to buy them some of the more childish items, like a stuffed animal or a toy, and observe their reaction. If they hated it, they weren't a Little, and you should move on right away. However, if they did like it, you could finally ask.
As Kara took great care to carefully put everything back onto the bag, I watched the way she handled each item and how she looked when she stared at them. While she wasn't leaping for joy like an obvious Little would have, she did seem to appreciate each and every item, right down to the funny pink hair ties I had bought her. Once everything was put away, she looked up at me suddenly, a strange look on her face.
"Is there something you're trying to tell me?" she asked, her voice having taken on a serious tone. "Or something I should know about?" Immediately, panic started to set it, and I struggled to remain as calm as possible.
"What on Earth do you mean?" I asked. "I only bought you a gift to thank you for everything you've done for me." Not seeming convinced, she stared at me for a moment.
"Which I really appreciate," she agreed, "but, normally when someone buys a gift to thank them, they stick to the basics. A card of some kind, a candle, a hat and scarf… This gift feels more like a test than a thank you." I winced as I stared at her in surprise.
She was much smarter than I had anticipated, and I felt as though things were about to go horribly wrong. The last time I had tested someone, they caught on almost immediately, and they threw me out of their apartment before I had a chance to fully explain myself. Not wanting a repeat of the last time, I shook my head, reminding myself to remain as calm as possible.
"If you don't like it, I can always take it back," I offered. "All you have to do is just say so." She studied my face a little while longer, and I realized that she had seen through me and was about to make her final judgement call.
"Are you trying to tell me that you're a Daddy?" she asked, catching me off-guard. I frowned as I stared at her a moment, trying to process her question.
"You know about Daddies?" I asked, my voice catching in my throat thanks to my initial shock. "I didn't know you knew." She smiled a little as she shrugged.
"I went to college in the city," she reminded me gently. "There was a lot worse people there than just Daddies, and a lot of them were professors." Realizing that, in a place like the city, Daddies were a little more common, I couldn't believe how blind I had been. After considering this factor, I nodded.
"I guess you're right," I agreed. Seeing the way she was watching me, I knew there was nothing more to do than be truthful with her. "Yes, I am a Daddy." Rather than looking surprised or disgusted, she nodded in response.
"I figured as much," she commented casually, seeming completely unphased by the revelation. "I mean, other than the fact that you definitely look like a Daddy, a lot of the telltale signs were there." She paused as she watched me, her expression looking curious as she watched me. "I suppose my only other question is how you knew I was a Little?" Realizing that this would be the trickiest part of it all, I shook my head.
"I didn't, actually," I admitted, rubbing the back of my neck out of embarrassment. "The gift really was a thank you gift, but I did add a few things to it to see how you might react." She took this into consideration as she sat down at the table, losing herself in thought for a moment as she did.
"Did I pass the test?" she asked, her voice taking on a hopeful tone. "Did I react the way you wanted me to?" At this point, I couldn't help myself and burst into laughter.
I had made a complete and total fool of myself, risking everything to buy her a gift only a Little would like, and she was worried about having passed my test. This was such a typical Little thing, and I still couldn't believe my ears. The only reason for the test was to see if she was a Little, and she had confirmed it for me without me even asking her to. The whole situation was too much to bear.
"Sort of," I informed her as I sank down into the chair beside her. "You see, I was trying to see if you were a Little without making things awkward between us in case you weren't. The fact that you caught on right away and openly admitted to being a Little and knowing about Daddies was all the proof I needed." A look of confusion washed over her as she considered this before looking back at the bag.
"So, does that mean you're taking the gift back?" she asked, the concern in her voice making me want to laugh all the more as I watched.
"Of course not," I reassured her. "First of all, unless you were lying about liking the gift, it's still a gift to you. Besides, if you decide you want to stick around, we can put all of that to good use." That really got her attention, and she smiled up at me.
"You mean it?" she asked, and I nodded. "Isn't that breaking the rules, though?" Considering this for a moment, I shook my head.
"Who's going to stop us?" I asked. "After all, we're both adults."
CHAPTER NINE
Kara
Even though I had never actually been on a date before, I still knew that it wasn't exactly proper to spend the night with someone you just met. However, in my opinion, Daddies were different, and that's why I liked them. When it came to being with a Daddy, Littles didn't have to worry about a thing or make any decisions. The whole point of being a Little was to allow the Daddy to make all the choices and take care of the Little.
While I was hesitant to go along with it, I wanted to prove that I was a good Little and more than capable of being a proper Little. It was my first date, and I couldn't believe how kind he had been so far. Now that dinner was over, I knew that there was a chance he might expect more.
"So, do you want to stay over?" he finally asked, giving me a gentle smile. "We don't have to do anything. We could always just sit and watch a movie." I considered this for a moment before nodding in agreement.
"A movie would be good," I agreed. "Shouldn't I prepare for bed first, though?" He smiled and nodded at the gift bag he had given me.
"Go head," he instructed me. "I got everything in there for you. I'll make some popcorn while I wait for you. Just call me when you're done so I can check on your hair." Immediately, I made my way over to the bathroom to prepare myself for a shower.
