CHAPTER TWO
Nathan
From the moment I arrived in town, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The Barbarians had fallen from grace and run to a small town with their tails tucked between their legs after issues with the King's Knights. I couldn't believe that they were the same group my brother had ruled over almost an entire year ago. What happened to him was a tragedy, but it was part of our lifestyle. Ever since he had died, the Barbarians had gone soft and been reduced to the group that they were now.
About the only thing in this town worth seeing was the woman I had seen exiting the bakery that my niece, Rebecca, had opened as a legit business to help hide the group. The woman was short with long black hair, and her deep brown eyes had looked both startled and curious as they watched us pull into the parking lot. Unable to help myself, I watched as she turned her attention towards her vehicle and quickly got in. Of course, like everybody else, she sensed that we were different and tried to escape as quickly as she could.
"Something on your mind?" Eric asked as he looked over at me as he dismounted his bike. After the woman had disappeared behind the protection of her tinted windows, I turned to smile at him.
"Just enjoying the view," I reassured him before turning my attention back towards the bakery. "Let's get going. I need to say hello to my niece." Following my example, the rest of the group dismounted their motorcycles and followed me into the bakery.
It was a quaint little place that looked like your standard bakery, and even I had to admit that I was pretty impressed at the way my niece's dream had turned out. Rebecca had always wanted to own her own bakery and coffee shop, and, as I looked around at the setup she had created within the short amount of time she had been here, I couldn't help but feel amazed at how well she had done for herself. We had just barely gone and then the door when Rebecca, now fully grown, came out of the kitchen and up to the cash register.
"Welcome to A Taste of Her," she greeted us with a smile, and I wondered if she even recognized me as she looked at all of us. "What can I get started for you guys?" Realizing that she didn't even recognize me, I frowned and crossed my arms across my chest.
"Have I really been gone so long that you don't even recognize your own uncle?" I asked. Immediately, her eyes narrowed, and she stared at me suspiciously.
"If you're my uncle, then what's your name?" she asked, and I couldn't help but chuckle at her cautious behavior.
"It's Nathan," I replied. "I'm sorry I didn't get to go to Daniel's funeral a year ago, but I'm here to see Chase." A glint of recognition flickered in her eyes, and she nodded towards the tables.
"If he's expecting you, he'll come find you," she informed us, still not seeming convinced at my claim. "You can take a seat and wait, but, if you start any trouble in my bakery, I will have no choice but to have you removed." Remembering the spunky little girl she had been growing up, I knew that she meant it, even though she was so tiny in comparison to the rest of us.
"You have my word that we will be on our best behavior," I reassured her. Turning to face the men who had followed me into the bakery, I nodded towards the tables. "You heard my niece. Take a seat and wait. If you start any trouble, you'll have to deal with me first." The men nodded in response and took a seat around the dining room, and I smiled as I turned to look back at my niece. "Even though you don't recognize me, it is still good to see you. I'm sorry it's been so long." Crossing her arms firmly against her chest, she shook her head at me.
"It's a bit late for apologies," she replied, her voice a bit cold. "If you want to prove to me that you still care, I recommend that you don't start any trouble while you're here. We've worked really hard to build a life for ourselves here, and we don't need the law on our tail again." With that, she disappeared into the kitchen again, and I sat down at one of the tables. Immediately, Eric sat down across from me a confused look on his face.
"I understand that she's your niece, he began as he looked back towards the door that she had disappeared through, "but are you really going to let her talk to you that way?" I glared at him in annoyance, and he immediately shut up.
"If I were you," I warned as I stared at him coldly, "I wouldn't be starting any trouble. Don't forget where your loyalty lies." Lowering his gaze, Eric nodded his head.
I meant no disrespect he apologized I'm just not used to seeing people disrespect you that way rolling my eyes I shook my head at him
Well I normally wouldn't accept it from anybody else I feel like I deserve it I informed him after all I'm the one who took off and never visited her even when she lost her father as far as she is concerned I am a stranger and should be treated as such and our line of work no one trusts a stranger therefore her cold attitude towards me is completely understandable he considered this a moment before nodding his head in agreement
I'm sorry he finally told me I guess I'm just worried about what Chase is going to say once he comes shaking my head I punched him in the shoulder playfully
You let me worry about Chase I informed him we're not here to start any trouble nor are we going to be taking over the group my brother left Chase in charge therefore we are going to follow what Chase says the last thing we want is to get caught
