CHAPTER SIX

Nathan

As soon as she asked me the question, I immediately paused, completely lost for words. Part of me wanted to be one hundred percent honest with her, but the other part already knew that she couldn't know the truth. Not only would it put the group at risk, but it could also put her at risk.

Chase had already filled me in on the entirety of the situation that caused the group to move to Colorado in the first place. Thanks to a snitch the King's Knights and the Barbarians had been exposed to law enforcement, and, in order to prevent them from being able to track any illegal activities that the group had done over the last few years, they had tied up all their loose ends back in Texas and moved to Colorado to live a legit life until it was safe to go back to their activities. My men and I weren't the only ones who were growing antsy either. The entire group missed their life back in Texas, but they all knew it was for the greater good of the group.

Even though I knew it wasn't safe to tell her, I still wanted to. She had intrigued me, and I was genuinely curious how she would respond if she knew the truth. Would she turn out to be a snitch and go to the authorities? Or would she actually be okay with it and continue to associate with me as well as Rebecca and the others?

As I struggled to decide what I was going to tell her, Rebecca and Lydia came in from the dining room and found us sitting at the break table. Neither of them said a single word as they sat down at the table on either side of Megan. After a short silence, Rebecca looked over and smiled at Megan.

"So," she started as she examined Megan's expression, "any trouble on your first day at work?" Immediately, my heart dropped, and I knew that my fate was in Megan's hands.

If Megan told them the truth and admitted that I hadn't helped at all for the first part of the day, Rebecca could easily report me to Chase and send me away. I didn't want to be reassigned to another business because it would mean that I wouldn't get to see Megan anymore. However, I wouldn't blame her if she did tell the truth. Much to my surprise, Megan turned to smile back at Rebecca and shook her head.

"Absolutely not at all," she lied casually as she met Rebecca's gaze. "Thanks to Nathan here, we were able to get everything done without any trouble at all." Rebecca raised an eyebrow at her before turning to look at me.

"Really?" she said, not seeming convinced as she stared at me. "I didn't know you could bake." I laughed and shook my head as I crossed my arms to my chest.

"Actually, before Megan started helping me, I couldn't," I admitted. Pointing a finger at Megan, I gave her a small wink. "You made a good choice hiring this one. She's a really good teacher and amazing at what she does." Megan blushed an embarrassment as she looked away, and Rebecca looked for me to her and back again, still not seeming convinced.

"Well, I'm glad everything worked out," she finally said after a couple of minutes. "I'm not going to lie, I had my doubts about you at first, but, seeing how everything panned out today, I think I'll tell Chase to keep you here permanently." Thrilled at the idea of getting to continue to work with Megan, I nodded in response.

"That sounds amazing," I replied, grateful that she finally seemed to be warming up to me.

This was all because of Megan, and I couldn't believe how lucky I had been all day. If she would have allowed me to, I would have kissed her right here and now after. Hearing those words from my niece. Now that Rebecca wasn't getting annoyed with me anymore, I could finally focus on building my relationships with the rest of the group.

"So, Megan," Rebecca said as she turned to look back at her. "Do you have any particular plans for the holidays?" Realizing that she was talking about Christmas and the New Year, which was only 2 weeks away, I turned to face Megan, who thought for a moment before shrugging.

"Honestly, I don't," she admitted as she looked back at Rebecca. "My parents moved to Florida last year while I was still attending school, and having just graduated, I haven't been able to make any travel plans." Seeing the sneaky look on Rebecca's face, my heart dropped.

"Why don't you spend Christmas with us?" she suggested, and I couldn't believe my ears.

Why was she trying to introduce Megan to the rest of the group? Was she trying to get us caught? The whole point of moving out here in the first place was to make sure that nobody found out the secret about our past so that we could one day return to it. If Megan found out, there was no telling what could happen.

Megan considered this for a moment, and I found myself, hoping that she would say no. As much as I wanted to get to spend time with her, I didn't want any interference from the rest of the group. For all I knew, one of the other members would get the wrong idea, and I would get in trouble for destroying them for putting a hand on Megan. After a long silence, Megan shrugged.

"I don't see why not," she replied with a smile. "What do you guys typically do for the holidays?" Before I could stop Rebecca, she grinned from ear to ear.

"We all get together for a big Christmas party with family and friends," she explained as she turned her body towards Megan. She seemed eager to tell her everything, and I already had a bad feeling about this.
