CHAPTER TEN
Eric
By the time we had scared off the human traffickers who had tried to steal Beth, she had been here for almost three months. We had been dating for just over two months, and Rebecca was begging Beth to stay at the bakery. Now that it was safe for Beth, Chase had called to meet with her to discuss her options.
But much to my surprise, when he called Beth, he didn't tell me. Instead, he only asked Russell to sit in while they discussed everything with her. Meanwhile, I was left to run errands for the compound and had been in the city all day. By the time I got back, it was almost dinner time, and I found Beth sitting in my room waiting for me.
"Hey," she said with a sad smile when she saw me. "Can we talk for a moment?" I paused, fearing the absolute worst, especially after seeing the look on her face.
She looked as though she was lost in thought and having a hard time figuring out how she was going to put her concerns into words. I thought something had gone terribly wrong and started to panic. Whatever it was she wanted to talk about, it couldn't be good.
"Sure," I finally said, sitting down on the bed next to her. "Is everything okay? Did something happen at the bakery today?" She shook her head, her expression still distant as she considered what she was going to say.
"I talked to Chase today," she said, and my heart stopped.
"Oh," I said, realizing what this must have been about. "What did he say?"
"He said that he got everything taken care of in Texas with my stepdad and his buddies and wanted to know if I wanted to go back," she said. I felt the color drain from my face and shook my head.
What had she told him? Had she changed her mind about being with me and made plans to leave?
"And what did you say?" I asked.
"I told him that I wanted to stay with the group and continue working with Rebecca at the bakery," she said, and I heaved a sigh of relief.
"That's great," I said, but, after seeing the look on her face, I stopped. “There’s more, isn’t there?”
“He said that he wanted me to work at the bakery more than I was,” she said. “Since Sarah’s dealing with her baby, and Lydia is expecting, it’s only Rebecca, Megan, Nathan, and I working at the bakery. Because of how busy it’s getting, Chase said that we either need a lot more people or we need to work a lot more for a little less. I wanted to check with you to make sure you were okay with me working more hours until we can get more help." Realizing what she meant, I felt even more proud of her and her response.
This was every Daddy's dream. To have a Little who not only chose to stay with them and do as they said but didn't make drastic decisions on their own. Instead, they went straight to their Daddy and allowed the Daddy to do his job and provide for them and help them make decisions that would affect the two of them. Seeing her expectant stare, I shrugged.
"Before I say anything, is it something you want to do?" I asked. She nodded, and I continued. "If it gets to be too much, what do you plan on doing?" She thought for a moment before shrugging.
"I haven't thought of that," she said. "I just know that I want to help out as much as possible until we can get some more help. It's not fair to leave Rebecca high and dry without the help that she needs."
"Alright, I'll let you do it," I said. "But there are a few conditions I want you to agree to before you accept Chase's offer."
"What are they?" she asked. While I found her enthusiasm adorable, I desperately hoped that she was taking this conversation seriously.
"First, you have to promise me that you won't overdo it," I said. "I don't need you exhausting yourself because you agree to do too much work only to work yourself ragged trying to do it all. You're only human, therefore you can only do so much."
"I promise," she said, and I continued.
"Also, I need you to promise that you will only work what is needed," I said. "Don't go accepting even more work on top of the extra hours you are already working because someone can't do it. You need a chance to take a break and refresh yourself so that you don't end up burning out." Again, she promised, and I continued. "Third, you have to promise me that you’ll never make a big decision like this without asking me. I know it seems like a lot, but I don’t want you to decide to run off and do something and leave me in the dark.” Once again, she nodded in response.
"From what I understand it's only temporary," she said. "Even though Amanda never came to the compound, Chase did mention that she was going to be paying us a visit soon. He mentioned something about her wanting to be closer to her sister after everything that happened." Relieved that they would be receiving more help and soon, I smiled, the relief washing over me as I considered this.
"That would be amazing," I said. "The sooner you guys get more help in the bakery, the sooner everyone can go back to a somewhat normal life."
"What about you?" she asked. "Would you consider working in the bakery?"
"Absolutely not," I said. "I can't bake to save my life, and my customer service skills are the worst."
"I suppose that makes sense," she said as she looked down at the bed sheets. As if suddenly remembering something, her face lit up as she looked back up at me. "I almost forgot to tell you that Chase is looking for you."
"I better go see him then," I said as I rose to my feet. "I suppose I'll see you at dinner."
"And after dinner," she said with a coy smile. A soft chuckle escaped me as I nodded in agreement.
"Yes, Little One," I said as I stared down at her perfect body. "And after dinner."
The only reason that Chase would want to speak to me was if he had an assignment for me or if he was truly upset that I had been involved with Beth. Normally, he didn't mind if the men got involved with the women on the compound, but he had explicitly told me that he wanted me to keep my distance. For all I knew, he was livid and about to let me know. While I wasn't afraid of Chase, I did know that upsetting him could lead to my banishment from the Barbarians.
"Come in," Chase called out when I knocked on the door. Seeing that it was me, Chase smiled, which was a reassuring sign that he wasn't angry. "There you are, Eric. I was hoping to catch you before dinner."
"Is everything alright?" I asked.
"Of course," he said. "I just wanted to talk to you about the possibility of recruiting more people to join."
Beth now has a sweet biker Daddy to take care of her, and Eric has a cute Little all for himself.
