I didn’t let her finish that sentence as I pushed her hand off of me, glaring, “Stop talking about her that way. If you knew the truth, you would keep your damn mouth shut. That ‘woman’ you are talking about is the woman I want to spend my life with. She is funny, and kind, and she makes me feel things that I have never felt before. I would never give her up for a whore like you.”
I saw the tears in her eyes, but as she backed away, I froze when I saw Serena standing in the doorway, eyes wide as she stared at us. By the look on her face, I knew she had just heard everything that I had said. A blush stained my cheeks, feeling a little embarrassed that she had heard my feelings for her this way, but I didn’t regret it.
“Serena,” I called to her, rising to my feet as I moved away from the waitress. “Please talk to me.”
I saw the tears in her eyes as she looked away, “I – I don’t know what to say to you, Kellan.”
I approached her, knowing that all eyes were on us, but I didn’t care, “I’m not sure how much you just heard, but I meant every word that I said. You’re it for me. I knew I had feelings for you that day when you… well, uh, left me. I was going to tell you but before I could, you were gone.”
Serena still couldn’t meet my eyes. “How could you like someone like me?”
I frowned, hating the fact that she thought low of herself. “Someone like you? Do you mean a beautiful woman who brings out the best in me? Who made me want to quit my job and do something else with my life? I left that job, Serena.” I could see the surprise in her eyes now. “I was going to leave before. You were my last client; but when I met you, I had a legitimate reason to want to go. You made me realize there are some things in this world that money just can’t buy, and I don’t want to live without you.”
I could see the tears silently falling down her cheeks.
“Now, we may not last,” I said, feeling bad but I had to say it. “None of us know what the future will hold. Things happen that we have no control over, but I want to risk that with you. I want to see where our relationship is going to go. I don’t want to worry about things that have yet to happen. I don’t want to worry about the future. In the here and now, all I know is that I want to be with you, and I will do whatever it takes to show you I mean it. All you need to do is give me a chance.”
The people in the café were watching with interest, even the workers stopping what they were doing to watch. I knew we could both feel their stares, but at the same time, it felt like we were the only people in the world. Serena’s eyes met mine, searching for an answer, and I was pleased when a shy smile graced her lips.
“Okay,” she whispered.
The café erupted into cheers as I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her in for a kiss. Serena greedily pressed her body against mine, kissing me back with a passion that neither of us had felt in the past two weeks. I just needed to hold her close to me and never let go.
“I am so glad you hired me that day, baby girl,” I whispered.
She nuzzled her way against my chest, sighing, “So am I, daddy.”
And that was the beginning of our story.
