Surprisingly, he did answer.

“I honestly am not sure if it was worth it,” he said softly, looking like he was lost in thought, “but the money was good. I do know that.”

I wanted to ask more, but the look on his face told me that it wasn’t going to be a good idea. I clenched my jaw, turning my attention back to my food, my stomach rumbling in protest.

Kellan was quite a mystery to me, and I really wanted to learn more.

I just needed to remind myself that this was a business relationship, nothing more.

CHAPTER FOUR

Kellan

The daycame that I was to attend the wedding with Serena.

I didn’t want to admit it, but I was quite nervous. Ever since I had lunch with Serena, spilling more of my secrets to her than I have told anyone before, we continued to text back and forth, not even bothering to talk about the wedding. It made me wonder if she was feeling the way I was, and I wasn’t just imagining it.

I wore a nice black suit, since the wedding was supposed to be more formal, and I drove to Café Dumont in my Mercedes Benz. I slicked my hair back, looking my best for her – or rather, the job. I never thought she was going to ask me to drive her to the wedding, but as she explained it, it would look weird if we showed up in different cars.

You would’ve thought she had done this before.

Once I arrived at the café, I texted her before I got out of my car and waited, going to hold open the door for her. Yes, the job was only for tonight, but I had a proposal for her. I hoped things were going to go my way, because I knew what I wanted, and I would do whatever it took to have it.

I just hoped she felt the same way.

“Kellan!” I heard her greet softly.

I looked up, opening my mouth to respond, but all I could do was stare at her as she walked toward me. Serena wore an elegant but casual black dress that hugged her body in all the right places. The ruffles swished along her ankles with every step she took, giving her a more graceful look. Her hair was pulled back in a pretty little hairstyle, strands of hair framing her face, showing off her sharp features.

It was as if my breath had been sucked out of me.

She is so gorgeous, I mused.

“How do I look?” She asked softly, twirling around to give me a full view. “Do you think this is a proper dress to wear to a wedding?”

I snapped out of my daze, knowing for right now I just needed to go along with her on this, “Of course. It fits you quite well, Serena, you look beautiful.”

I saw her eyes light up at my compliment, my heart stuttering in my chest as she reached out and placed a hand on my chest, “You look very handsome yourself, Kellan.”

A part of me wondered in that moment if she was going to lean forward and kiss me. I knew her ruby red lips were inviting me in, and I swore her eyes flirted to mine as well. I leaned slightly closer, feeling my blood pumping through my veins and down to my cock.

I needed her…

Before I could do anything, Serena had walked around me, waiting for me to open the door for her. I kept a pleasant smile on my face even though I felt disappointed at the same time. I swore in that moment she wanted me to kiss her. The vibes I was getting told me so and the way she was looking at me…

Why didn’t she let me?

I decided not to push it as I opened the door for her, letting her into my car. I knew by the end of the night, I was going to have multiple opportunities to kiss her the way I wanted to. By the heated looks I received from her sometimes and the way she flirted through text, I had a feeling that she wanted me just as much as I wanted her.

I hoped she realized I wasn’t acting this way because of my job.

Ever since my ex died, I never truly wanted to be with anyone else. A part of me went with her when she died, and yes, she had told me that I needed to move on one day because dwelling on her death wasn’t going to bring her back, but I couldn’t help feeling betrayed when she said that to me.

It was like she didn’t care that she was dying. That she just wanted me to give up on her. I wanted to cherish every moment I had with her, not worrying about someone that was going to come in the future. When she died after graduation, it was actually unexpected because she had been doing so well the day before. I knew she wasn’t going to just be better, but when I found her cold and lifeless in my arms, a part of me just snapped and I couldn’t handle it.

I locked myself in my room for over a week, barely able to eat or drink. My family, my friends… they didn’t know what to do with me. They knew how much she meant to me. They knew that her death was going to hit me hard, but at the same time, they didn’t. They figured that since I knew she was dying, I would somehow prepare myself for it.

Like it made the whole situation any better.
