CHAPTER TWO
Jordan
If I was perfectly honest with myself, I couldn't wait to get back to Alaska. I only spent two weeks in the states, and I was already fed up and ready to go home. It was much too hot down here, and everybody was too crowded and noisy. I missed the isolation and the cold winter weather of the Alaskan Frontier. The fact that I had even gone on vacation in the first place seemed a bit absurd now that it was finally over, and I promised myself that I was never going to do it again.
I don't know why I had convinced myself that going on vacation was a good idea in the first place. After seeing the way Jeremy ended up meeting Clary and married within a few months, perhaps it was the fact that I had been naive enough to think that I would find somebody I would fall in love with while in the states and maybe even decide that I liked it enough to stay. However, after the two-week vacation, I completely changed my mind and couldn't wait to get as far away from everybody in the states as humanly possible.
Of course, I loved the business class treatment on the airplanes. In my opinion, it was the only good thing about the trip and the fact that everybody was so kind and polite on the airplane made it all the better in comparison to my trip to Vegas about the only thing I could think of that would make the business class even better was if a cute woman was sitting next to me the entire flight who new maybe I would take the opportunity to join the mile-high club.
“Right this way, Miss,” said the familiar voice of the flight attendant as she started to approach my row. “There's some space right here.” I felt my interest peek as I looked over in time to see the flight attendant escorting a beautiful young woman to my same row, my heart leaping as soon as I saw the woman.
Originally, I had thought the flight attendant was the most attractive woman on the flight, but I already knew that there was no way the two of us would end up together especially considering how clean-cut and professional I knew all flight attendants were. However, this woman was even better than the flight attendant, making me feel sorry for her. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a messy bun which rested at the top of her head so that when she was seated, it wouldn't get messy or mess with the way she was sitting in her seat. It was clear that she was a new flyer based on the nervous expression on her face as she followed the flight attendant to my row and took her seat, and I couldn't wait to be alone with her.
“I'll be bringing buy some drinks here in a bit,” the flight attendants said as soon as she had finished stowing away the carrion the woman had been carrying. “Let me know if you need anything for your stomach when I come by. I have a few tricks up my sleeve from dealing with nervous new flyers all the time.” Before either of us could say anything, the flight attendant disappeared, leaving the woman sitting in the seat next to me, and I turned to smile at her
“First-time flyer?” I asked, trying to break the ice between the two of us. She looked pale as she turned her attention towards me and gave a nervous nod.
“Is it that obvious?” she asked as she tilted her head at me looked at me up and down as she spoke. When I nodded my head in response, she continued. “Yeah, it's my first time. I have to go to Alaska to look for a friend of mine in order to bring her home so that she can see her family.” Confused, I raised an eyebrow at her trying to figure out why somebody would be flying several thousand miles from home just to retrieve a friend for their family.
“I see,” I said, sounding a bit skeptical as I spoke. “Is there a family emergency that the friend’s not responding to?” She thought about it for a moment before nodding her head once more.
“I guess you can say that,” she said as she pulled out her phone and put it on airplane mode. “I shouldn't go into any detail about it right now, but let's just say that if I don't get in contact with her, she may never see her family again.” More questions rose inside me as I tried to refrain from asking any more questions regarding the situation, the harder it became to continue the current conversation. Deciding it would be best to change the subject, I shrugged my shoulders.
“You know there are a few tricks to surviving the first flight that a lot of people won't tell you,” I said with a playful wink in her direction. “If you want, I can teach them all to you so that you can survive your trip back home.” She considered this for a moment before giving me an innocent smile, not seeming to understand exactly what I was insinuating at that moment.
“I really appreciate the offer, and I just might take you up on that,” she replied eagerly, almost making me feel bad for insinuating what I had been before offering me her hand. “My name is Lacey. What's yours?” Reaching over, I gently took her tiny hand in my massive hand and gave it a soft shake.
“Jordan,” I replied as we shook hands. “It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Lacey.”
