CHAPTER TWO

Jason

I check my line and settle back into my chair, watching and listening as the world wakes up with the rising sun. The catfish will start feeding soon and with any luck, I’ll have caught dinner before anyone else is out on the lake. Not that I’m some kind of recluse who hates people and wants to be by myself all the time. I just enjoy the opportunity to greet the forest as it wakes before the noise of the human world interrupts and drowns everything in manufactured sound.

Yeah, that’s a little flower child of me, I guess. I’m not one of those save the trees types, I promise. I’m actually a lumberjack, so I’m not saying that people are ruining the environment or the outdoors or anything like that. I just like the calm of the early morning forest. The stillness settles me, and the sound of the gradually waking world helps me focus. Always has, for as long as I can remember.

My thoughts are definitely not settled at the moment, but they are focused. They’re focused entirely on the little girl I met last night.

Hannah is incredible for many reasons. First, she actually looks like a woman and not a stick figure like most of the girls I meet. She has curves everywhere curves are supposed to be and her body just might be the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.

It’s not just her body, though. Before we head to her rental cabin, we talk, and it quickly becomes clear that there is more to her than just an attractive figure. She’s sweet and funny and smart as a whip and the fact that she clearly doesn’t realize that about herself triggers the Daddy in me. I want so much to help her understand how incredible she is, and it takes a lot of restraint for me not to spend last night creating rules and guidelines to help her gain confidence.

I miss that.

I miss being a real Daddy to someone and not just a Daddy for the night. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the fact that my type is very appealing to the tourists that visit throughout the year to enjoy the fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, and skiing that make Sweet Pines City famous. I don’t seek out female companionship every night, but when I do, I never have any trouble finding someone willing to enjoy a night with a hunky lumberjack.

That’s all well and good but being a Daddy isn’t just about getting sex from girls who think it’s hot for a buff dude with a beard and an axe to dominate them in bed. I want the relationship. I want to nurture and care for a little girl. I want to watch her grow and have the best life she can possibly have, and I can’t do that with people who are only here for a week at most.

I suppose I could just only date girls who live in town but most of the girls in town aren’t little girls. The few that are already have a Daddy. One-night stands with girls from town are messy anyway. The point of something casual is for it to remain casual. Now, I want more but I don’t see that happening with a local. In order to have the relationship I want, there needs to be a real connection between me and the little girl and that’s easier said than done.

I could have a relationship with Hannah. She is beautiful and wonderful and incredible and everything I could ever want in a little girl. If only she weren’t just renting a cabin.

My fishing pole jerks, pulling me from my thoughts. I quickly grab the pole and in ten minutes, I’ve landed a nice eight-pound cat. Over the next few hours, I land eight smaller ones, release four, and head toward sure just as the sunrise tourist boats leave the commercial docks.

I moor in front of my lake house about a mile from the tourist docks and get to cleaning the catfish and packing them on ice to take inside. I’ve got the large one cleaned and two of the smaller when I hear a voice. “Well, fancy meeting you here.”

I turn around and to my surprise, I see Hannah. My heart leaps with joy and I have to remind myself that she’s leaving today so I don’t get overly excited. I smile at her and say, “Well, hello. Come to say goodbye before you leave?”

“Leave?” she says. “What do you mean?”

I frown and say, “You’re leaving today, right?”

She shakes her head. “No. Why would I be leaving?”

I blink in confusion. “You’re not a tourist?”

“No,” she says. “I live here.”

Suddenly, my day is a thousand times better. It’s no longer out of the question that I could have a real little girl. It doesn’t have to be just last night; it can be something real.

I remind myself that we’ve only known each other for a day, so it’s a little presumptuous to assume we can have anything beyond a little fun. Still, it’s at least a possibility and it’s one possibility I don’t intend to let pass me by. “You’re not renting that cabin?”

She giggles and says, “I rented it last season and when I called to rent it again, the owners told me they were putting it up for sale so I bought it.”

“Just like that?”

She laughs, “I do a lot of things just like that.”

“Well then,” I say. “How would you like to have dinner with me, just like that?”

She laughs. “What, if I didn’t live here, I wouldn’t be worth dinner?”

I take a risk and say, “If I have dinner with you, I’m going to want more than just casual fun, and it would be very hard to get to know you better then say goodbye just as that was starting to happen.”

She smiles at me and her face colors slightly as she responds, “Well, I would love to get to know you too.” She giggles and says, “just like that.”

“Wonderful,” I say. “Just let me get these fish inside and clean up a little and then we can talk about what to eat.”

“Inside?” she asks. She looks up at my house. “Is that you?”

“Yep,” I say. “My grandfather built it sixty years ago. He left it to my parents, and they added to it. Then, they gave it to me when they retired.”

“So, you live here too?” she says, surprised.

“I do,” I say. “All my life.” I shrug. “I’ve never lived anywhere other than right in that cabin.

“Wow,” she says.

Her grin tells me she’s as excited by the news as I am by the news that she also lives here. She says, “Well, let’s get you inside and cleaned up then. Hey, while we’re talking, I know you want more than just a fun, casual thing, but would you be opposed to having some more fun before dinner?”

I smile at her and say, “I think you know the answer to that question.” I point to the fish and say, “Do you think you can wait until I finish with these or will you explode with frustration?”

She smiles and says, “You can finish. It might even be fun to see me explode.”
